R80ST - Upgrading to progressive springs ?

so apart from the springs, and oil seals, is there anything else I need to order?

You can mess around with mixing the fork oil and having different specs either side.........use BM stuff or the Bel Ray stuff which is sold by Honda dealers

For Forks Sake

Ok lets talk fork oil

Now taking into consideration that I am a fat bugger, and my bike is quite often loaded with spam cans and camping gear, what would people recomend with regards foril weight?

The faster you go the less weight you have on the front end

Your size, (weight), should not really materially affect what happens to the front forks

Your size, (weight), will concern the rear shock

as far as fork oil specs are concerned.....do a search on the forum............Harold Millichap, (?), springs to mind.......but really it is what you are happy with plus the state of the Bike......the recomendations that are made are NOT what BM have ever recomended...BUT they seems to be popular and work.......each damper does a different job and that appear to be the logic for a different spec for each fork

Millichap or Yosi Cocktail

from memory

RH leg = 15W
LH leg = 16.25W - you need to mix it, (20% 20W and 75% 15W)

Left and right are measured when sitting on the Bike - i.e. in UK LH is nearside

But check by searching

I'd watch the progressive springs Kev, especially the Motorworks ones. I bought a pair last year for my R100. The springs are wound too tight at the ends making it difficult to fit the plastic end pieces, this distorts the springs making them rub in the fork tubes. The actions pretty bad as well. I much prefer new linear Oem springs.

I can't find oem springs for the ST?? maybe I will try the progressives from motobins then

ST springs - Your friendly BMW dealer will tell you.......his VDU computer system will tell him

There is a US site on the web with a list of all part numbers, bike by bike
If I remember it I will post the link

I have always been a believer in sticking to stock BMW stuff....but that's just me

31421237232 st compression springs
realoem site:augie

you could get some r80g/s forks:augie if you knew someone.:)

This upgrading the "front" end business is always a topic, but mainly discussed in connection with the G/S.

You can start with the original BM monlever stuff, then maybe think about fitting a set of 40mm Marzocchi, (R80GS paralever), in place of 36mm BMW, through to aftermarket and other manufacturers forks

Personally I always like to see all BMs as they came from the factory.

If you want to be more aggressive, off road, buy another Bike which is more suited to what you want to do.

Just my view
