Rain tyres?

Being new to biking means my knowledge of bikes & tyres isn't great, but I was wondering if any of you change your tyres for winter to cope with constant wet rainy weather?

Ive currently got Tourange Metzlers on, and I'll be commuting on my GSA all through the year, rain or shine. Is it worth putting a different tyre on for winter, then swapping back in the summer? Or am I talking out of my backside?

I've never heard of winter tyres on a bike and ran my old fireblade all through the winter on the same tyres as I used in the summer and had no problems. I didn't ride in snow but in all other weathers.

Thanks Mark. I guess the title was misleading so I've changed it, I wasn't referring to 'winter tyres' like folk fit to cars, just a different tyre for the constant rainy conditions expected in winter.

Nope, modern tyres are pretty damm good in the wet these days.

Mind you, my last set of race wets for the SM were cast off's from a guy who had run them on 17inchers on his 1200GS - they'd be a hoot in the wet but only last a few hundred miles at most.

Mind you, I love my GSA so much and its in such great condition that its almost a shame to subject it to winter riding . I wonder if theres room in my garage for a 2nd bike for winter?

Heidenau do specific winter tyres M&S markings and high silica content, not sure if hey do the sizes that you want

As said before, Road Pilots are designed to deal with wet weather and get lots of praise for that reason, but I've never used them. Personally I like Dunlop Trailmax TR91 and in my view they're very very sure footed in the wet….which is partly why I use them year round and after my sixth TR91 wears out, I'll probably buy the same again but could be tempted by the Road Pilots. There is deffo not just one correct answer to your question.

Yes.

On a serious note tho, as mentioned earlier, heidenau's are worth a try. The silica content means they warm up quicker which in winter has got to be a good thing. They can be a bit noisy tho. Me? Back on old style tourances after trying allsorts. Just a better all rounder in my humble opinion

Modern tyres are all pretty good on the wet IMO. it's all about how far you're prepared to trust them

I have driven my GSA in rain you wouldn't believe (well I didn't when I was doing it) and the grip from tourance tyres was the least of my problems. They performed absolutely fine including through standing water.

I like my pr3 on my GSA and would probably go for pr4 when it's time to change. Rain no problem.

Recently put PR4 on the back of my gs, no issues with wet weather grip, feel stable and secure as hard as I'm prepared to push it and very confidence inspiring.

I have PR4 now having killed the PR3s but whilst having them fitted I was looking at the Pirelli road angel GT

Having done a bit of research they look impressive on paper and are MCN tyre of the year so I may give them a go next time but would like to hear if any one has actually tried them ?
