RAM mounting an SPIII

Has anyone got a couple of pictures of a handlebar mounted SPIII, using a RAM mount please?

I am currently using the Touratech lockable cross brace mounted one but I quite like the idea of mounting it more to the left so that I can see all the RID unit.

Plus when the GPS is not mounted on the bike you do not have a ugly chunk of bracket sat right in front of you!

I have looked on the RAM UK site and it looks like I need the RAM B 149Z bracket, plus the SPIII mounting plate?

Anyone know what the part number is for the latter bracket and how does it secure to the GPS? Coz the one shown on the site looks like its for the 2610 not the SPIII?

I did consider it, but I don't like the idea of having it directly in front on you that high up.

Plus, I have read that there are some vibration concerns as well?

Just invested in a 256mb card which holds all the maps I need for the Tossers on Tour trip..........I think?

The complete mount kit is a RAM-B-149Z-G1 which attaches onto the Garmin cradle.

Assuming that I opted for the stainless steel u-bolt ,against the zinc plated one.

Alan .. use a RAM-B-149 which has stainless steel U-bolt, the diamond base then attaches on to the underside of the TT cradle, remove their cable clamps and then re-use their screw fixings. Sorted.

After our rideout I came home and had a bit of a fiddle ooer, and that is exactly how i set mine up!
It seemed this offered the best compromise of all the options i tried, glad to see this is also your opinion. I can now easily see the fuel gauge, gear indicator and if i lean fwd just a bit the temp gauge too. The only whinge I have is i have to remove the whole ram arm and tt carrier when i leave the bike whereas on your original fitting you just had to carry the actual gps, but thats just a small niggle really. Thanks for the pics,

Get yourself a Touratech mount instead of the plastic Garmin one - I wouldn't trust the OE mount on anything but smooth tarmac. You'll then be able to unhook the unit and put it in your bag/pocket when you stop...

So if I have read this right, what you are suggesting is fixing the RAM ball to the underside of Touratech mount?

Now I did think of doing that to be honest, but I thought about the added wieght hanging on the RAM mount arm.

Hence the reason why I opted for the route shown in the pictures.

No personal experience, I'm glad to say, although I do have a vague memory of someone on the board having one fail on them a couple of years ago...

The TT mount holds the unit far more securely, is made of light alloy and weighs next to nothing - I attached the diamond shaped mount to the bottom of mine and rode with it like that for 50k odd miles without any drama. I now use a Nav II and use the cradle with extra buttons bolted directly onto a RAM mount, in turn mounted on a MiGSel speedo mount...

Yep - that's exactly like it Tommy. I originally had the TT mount bolted directly to the crossbrace. When I fitted Ricky's Pro-Tapers (which don't have a crossbrace) I had to come up with an alternative solution...

I had my SPIII mounted in an identical way and position to BTBR, and I always ran with batteries in as well so it wasn't light.

It never shifted or gave me the slightest worry, even on off road stuff or rocky bottomed fords...the Touratech mount looks good and is a sexy bit of kit but seriously, I wouldn't worry about the SPIII's safety in it at all.

The only thing I did in addition was wrap half a dozen turns of insultingtape around the bar to prevent any damage from the 'u' bolt.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm............I see that you have put your U-bolt much lower down the bars than I have, does it cover the RID unit that low down?

I have located my U-bolt in between the handguard and the cross brace, so its quite a long way up. Using the Garmin mount that location it ideal, keeps the GPS well out of the way of the RID but also projects the unit upwards and more forward.

But when I tried using the same location with the Touratech mount on the end it put it up to high and looked kind off stupid.

Of course this is not helped by the fact that the RAM mount ball affixes to the rear of the Garmin mount and on the underside of the Touratech mount, hence the sudden increase in height.

So I have gone back to utilizing the Garmin mount, personnally the plastic mount looks plenty strong enough to me, it has the locking screw at the top to assist with the support and any vibration should be absorbed via the RAM mount.

I try it this way for a few weeks and see how we get on?

That said, maybe I'll just hold fire in selling the Touratech mount.........just in case!
