Started the bike (1300GS 2024) this morning and within 25 yards of my house the dash was displaying various errors (cruise control not operational, traction control error, abs not functioning). The bike went into limp mode with a max of about 15mph. I turned the bike around and returned home. When trying to turn the bike off, there was no response from the on/off switch, so I stalled the bike to stop the engine. I started the bike again, but still no response when trying to turn the bike off again - so I stalled it again to stop the engine.

I put the bike away in the garage (ignition still on with front/rear lights and sat nav on) and plugged it in to my battery charger to maintain the battery charge.

BMW Assist turned up after about 1.5 hours - the technician had a problem with his laptop, so couldn't plug it into the bike to see any fault codes. He then disconnected the battery, left it for 2 mins and then connected the battery again.

The bike ignition now starts (and turns off) and I took it for a 3 mile test ride with no dash errors, no normal service has been resumed. The bike has now been booked in at Wollaston Northampton to see if they can diagnose the root cause.

Has anyone else had this or a similar issue and can shed any light on the problem?

Thanks
Tony

normal.....

likely the battery took so much juice when it started, voltage dropped lower than x threshold and it lost the plot
with the engine off ! disconnect the battery - wait 10 mins, then with a charged serviceable battery, reconnect the battery and the main network module will boot up normally and all will be well with the world

as above, it will have stored a code for its muddle up for the techs to completely ignore
is it an early bike with a lithium battery ? with recent cold overnight temps they can't cope - most are getting upgraded to a real battery free of charge as the lithium ones are a waste of space

Yes, it is a lithium battery, but I've not had any issues in 2 years and 14k miles.

they don't like the cold - it allows them to underperform just enough that it gets a voltage drop high tech modern bikes don't like the look of

if you live in the middle east they cope, in northern europe its border line, we had 6C overnight the other day - if still in warranty see if they'll upgrade you - I believe unless you now chose it - none made for our market come with a lithium battery

Classic lithium battery issue . Just keep it topped up especially when the air temperature drops .

It’s not just BMW’s though. I’ve just done a week in Scotland on my Honda NT1100, and most mornings it was 6 or 7 degrees and my bike struggled to start.
Yes, it’s got a lithium battery.

Likely the battery. Experienced similar myself when the lithium battery voltage drops even slightly and the bike ‘shuts down’ the unnnecessary parts of electronics to give the remaining battery charge a better chance of starting the engine.

I got an AGM for free end of last year.

Thanks for the many replies and the consensus that it’s the battery. I’ll contact Wollastons and get it sorted under warranty.
