Random Guzzi Shit

About 3-4 years ago there was an MGS01 for sale in the midlands for somewhere around £16k which at the time seemed like OK value albeit to a lot of money. Look how many new bikes are now north of 15k and many are close to £20k

This is a bit special but £13k

Gentlemen,

As you two strike me as being as being "Guzzi" men I have a question for you both.

Andres encouraged me to buy a cloned Mk1 Le Mans in 2018 and the V5C says it is a 850cc but I'm sure, being a 1980 machine, that it was originally a G% or V1000 with a 950cc engine.
I've checked the frame no. (VG16248) which seems to be a V1000 but I can't find where to search for the engine no. record (it's 203145).

Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm still unsure if I'll keep as the clip-ons are a bugger to manoeuvre the bike with!

I haven’t a clue Khulu, sorry, I’m not up on that sorta shit at all but if engine numbers match the frame numbers then it’s fairly safe to assume it’s a V1000 lump?

Carb size maybe? Did they run bigger carbs?

Andres

Thanks for replying Andres.

Frame and engine nos. don't match - it's a "Guzzi" thing.

I'll research the carbs - I had a quick look earlier but will have a more careful dig about; good idea.

It's all your fault anyway!

I don't really care if it's an 850 or a 950 I'd just like to know - dotting"i"s and crossing "t"s! :beerjug::beerjug:

A Le Mans will have 36mm pumper Dellortos on rubber manifold adaptors and a V1000 will have had IIRC 30mm square slide carbs on solid ally manifolds that are angled in more. Very different visually.

Le Mans carbs do not go on V1000 heads without significant mods to the heads. Also Le Mans heads match the high comp domed shape of the Le Mans pistons. Though not interchangeable, it's not impossible to convert them. Wessons in Brighton used to do it.

I think you might need to take the heads off and measure the bore to get a definitive answer to the 850/950 question.

DellOrto PHF 36s on rubber manifold adaptors are fitted.
Maybe it is an 850 after all.

It was done by Muzzimoto who stated it was a G5 / Spada 950cc engine but the frame no. said it was from a V1000 and the V5C says 850cc.
I don't really care but I was interested to find out.

I think, looking at a couple of books, VG16**** frame would make it a Convert frame, G5 & Spada were VG18*** though the Frame numbers did over lap the marques. G5 & Spada production started in 1978, Convert production started in 1975. An engine number should start VG****

I’ve started doing a lot of research into Guzzi’s in the last few weeks

The frame number checks out as a V1000 I Convert.

If you look at the workshop manual for that bike it lists the carbs as N. 2 (left). Dell'Orlo: VHB 30 CD (right), VHB 30 CS

Link to the manual is here: http://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_manuals/workshop_manual_convert.pdf

You are bang on - I just took a couple pf images and you can really see the difference in the angle.

Most pics are self explanatory - the one without a badge is the V1000 convert. There's no clear pic of its carbs in the brochure.

Mick Walkers book Moto Guzzi Twins lists VHB30 CD/CS for Convert, 1000SP & G5 also for the 850 T series. The Le mans 1 2 & 3 all got the PHF36BS/BD.

Somebody like to polish...

Thank you all for the great info. Mine are definitely the same as in the Le Mans photo.
I would have thought the frames around then would have all been the same.

AFAIK all the big block frames were the same at that time. The only difference I can think of is the detachable rails would have mounts for footboards on the Cali and Convert.
