Rattles, please help

Hi guys,

i.ve got an 02 1150 GS, 70k miles.

it was making a horrific rattle so i changed the tensioners and it was quieter but still there, next i've done the tappets and again it is quieter but still there,

its ok at idle but under load it is obvious and loud, i'm planning on taking it to Ocean tomorrow so they can listen but i'm hoping someone on here may be able to give me some pointers, i'm sure people have posted on here about it before but i've literally never used a forum and don't know where to start.

Welcome, most people on here don't bite, those that do are toothless!

I wouldn't worry too much, I did as well, but these old engines make more noises than smooth running 4s. Mine I have had 14 years and is on 120,000 and has the original butterfly spindles (probably leak a bit) and the cam chain tensioners haven't been done either (rattle a bit). It is still on the original clutch (a bit grabby) and suspension (goings boing).....it transports me perfectly happily.

I saw a similar question to yours not so long ago and the advice given was to buy a set of ear plugs so you coudn't hear the rattles.

One thing I have noticed though, different oils perform differently - gooier oil, like an semi synthetic 10-40 seems to make mine run quieter than a lighter, modern oil. It doesn't need anything special, it is only a Citroen Diane engine pushing no weight!

I'll be gentle as you're new to forums..
How long have you owned the bike and has the noise suddenly appeared or always been there ?
Roughly what area of the engine is the noise coming from ?

Thanks. King rat. I'll try a gloopier oil next time I change it.

Steptoe, it's suddenly appeared. Funnily enough since I serviced it which has made King rats comment about oil sound like a good starting point. I've had the bike about a year now, it sounded for all the world like a top end rattle which is why we did the tappetts and the timing chain tensioners which has definately had an effect. But it's still there. Maybe a little further down like sort of under the rocker arm sort of area but nothing seemed worn and they were well in spec too. It just sounds really top endy!

Push rods? It's rare but the ends can come loose and tap away making lots of noise.

It died on me on the way to work this morning.
I was doing around 90 in 6th and it lacked power almost like I was in too higher a gear so I changed down and lasted 200 metres until it gave up the ghost.

There was a bit of a burny burny smell and a little bit of smoke just under the front end of the dash (just a wisp).

Lights etc all work fine and I get the initial click when I try to start it but that's it. The engine hasn't Seized, as im not in hospital. Could just be a totally unrelated coincidence or could all be part of the same problem.

Any ideas?

My first thought on the rattle was rocker arm end float. Easily checked and corrected if you're in the head.

The dying could be anything..... scary!

Are you sure it hasn't seized? Not always an instant thing.

Bad luck. 90mph I don't push my bikes to anything like that kind of speed! Happy to cruise at a fuel conserving 75-80, but then the fuel disappears too fast after that and I am a hard up, jobbing, photojournalist.

Just a click on startup? - hopefully just a battery/starter connection is loose.
Is the fuel pump cycling as well.

Take the plugs out and see if she spins on the button.
If not then put her in gear and turn the rear wheel by hand.

It's dead. It seems that the big end bearing cap worked a bolt loose and the other one snapped. It's all gone downhill from there. I've a feeling it's bye bye bike!

Thats tough.
Don't chuck it away as you can pick up a reasonably low mileage engine from people like James Sherlock reasonably cheap - sub £500.00

I see there's one on ebay advertised by them and its @ 350.00 buy it now. (twin spark though)
