A mate of mine wants to powder coat the rear wheel hub on his spoked wheel. The problem he is having is finding someone to rebuild the wheel up after.
He lives in the Wolverhampton area. He has tried Central Wheels and one other,wont/cant do rear BMW wheels?
Any one any idea,s.Thanks.

the only person I know who will do it is Doug Richardson http://devonwheelbuilding.com/. He used to be with the Devon Rim company who no longer touch BMW rims. I was chatting to him last week and you will be looking at 6-8 weeks!!

His wheel rebuilding looks top notch from the pictures with the stainless setup.

He sorted the front wheel on my gsa when it went out of true, came back with closer tolerances than bmw can manage on a new one

Having looked at the Adv Rider posts by Woody's Wheels, it looks like powder coat is a bad idea for the rims. Perhaps fortunate that I'd not got around to doing mine.

How do we now get in touch with Doug Richardson?

He did say that but while it's apart makes sense to do the rim as well. Except the spoke holes risk getting clogged up and now Woody mentions a tyre/rim grip and possible annealing issues.

But I've had two sets of cast alloy wheels powder coated in gloss black. No tyres slipping on the rims and no cracking or bending in the wheel structure. And - no problems with brake disc run-out.

I guess Chris Ward knows what he's doing.

im doing it now

Im in the middle of rebuilding a black rear gs wheel.

the one I bought had a bit of heavy corrosion on the hub, there was a small amount of evidence of corrosion around each spoke where it comes through the rim,

a quick strip down and repowder coat I thought, no chance spokes were mostly totally seized into the rim had to cut them and then drift each one out,its a bastard of a job, just about managed to salvage the rim.
no wonder wheel specialist are avoiding them, took me 8+hours.

Thanks to this thread I have managed to find replacement spokes and stainless nipples from Doug Richardson £100 for the set,the spokes are a bmw only size so are not he norm, they would cost about that from bmw for the spokes only.

As for needing a special jig for Truing the rear as far as I know its only for the mounting of the wheel in the truing jig, as in it has no bearing and needs an adapter, like you would need for balancing.so i made this,

Doug Richardson@s a busy man, quoted me 3months for the rebuild, I'm not desperate so will have a go myself.

This what it looked after cutting and managed to drift out ends, I then drifted them right out,
Woodys idea of putting a drill on them and spinning them seems like a good idea though, mine were tight and I mean TIGHT.

let us know how you get on, I plan on doing my R80Gs, I can sort out the truing jig easily and I have access to a tyre balancer, I suspect it will take ages, because the spokes are pulling on the rim rather than the centre, it adds another dimension to alignment, and they need tweeked as they get used, and that is the reason that commercial wheel builders avoid them!

"and they need tweeked as they get used"

Too true. I have had to return twice to Hagons as firstly the spokes in the front wheel loosened and then last week the rear spokes loosened. As the rims had been polished by an outside source, they wondered if polishing material had got into the spoke holes and not been cleaned out properly. Everything hunky dorey now though. Airhead spoke nipples have minute M2 grub screws in the ends of the nipples to lock things up.

One expert said to me that stainless steel isn't the best material for spokes but we like them, although Hagons contradicted this saying SS was no better nor worse than steel.:nenau

i think they are just built right in the first place, on a machine no third party builder could ever dream of owning.
