Re spokeing rear wheel.

i've seen a picture of said machine, but can't find it now.

I did find the website of a Derbyshire wheel builders who said they have such a jig. Can I find them now ???

Been to see Doug today about my somewhat corroded rear, very nice chap and pretty busy and definitely appears to suppose the powder coating route. Some of his stuff does look the dogs tangles.

by all accounts Hagons will rebuild BMW wheels too :thumby:

Having mine done now!

Just in the process of having mine rebuilt by Paul at SFX Wheels in Shareshill, thats somewhere near you I think.

The issue I have with powder coat for this job is the thickness of coating into the spoke holes. If its cleaned out there wont be any protection so corrosion will creep back. If its not cleaned out the spokes wont fit the holes. The rim especially has well fitting spoke heads.

I'm planning to have a test plate coated with standard size holes and some reamed out a few (say 100) microns. hopefully I'll be able to work out what works for the job. I suspect the hub spoke holes could then be appropriately reamed before coating but the rim I suspect is better anodised.

Well having seen the effect of badly anodised rim, I think I would be looking for the toughest finish I could. It's not necessarily the outside of the rim that corrodes

Choose a good anodisers. Unless it's masked off, the tank will do the whole rim inside and outside. Powder is more durable, but how you can be sure the spoke holes won't get clogged?

If they are so fugging well built in the first place how come my 2011 r1200gsa front wheel went out of true all by itself with no third party involvement ie accidents, pot holes etc after less than 5000 miles, ones on my old 1999 1150 are still fine after 50,000 miles plus

Its now possible to get tubeless compatible rims (that dont leak air) built with the old/normal style centreline spokes. Does anyone make special hubs for the GS? Only kidding - of course they don't.

somebody does,I've seen a gs with them on.

Its not hard,

I believe they are the makers of the standard spoked BMW wheels aswell.

the work of the guy who Sgt Bilco recomended looks bloody ace and his price is good too:thumb2 think i will be sending my grotty wheels there :)

For sea water read road salt

Im sure his work is top class there are some fab people about. BUT, if he's powder coating the rims, ask how he ensures full metal coverage into the spoke holes. If bare alloy touches stainless the alloy will corrode and the finish will eventually bubble just like the standard rims. We cant clean into the spoke holes but salt will collect in there and do its dirty deeds.

Doing a standard powder coat and cleaning out the spoke holes will look fab, but isnt going to last because there will be metal to metal contact.

There is probably a marine grade anti seize paste or galvanic isolating paste that could be used in the spoke holes but I dont know any names and Google isnt helping. But at best it will just slow the rate of corrosion.
