Rear diff leaking .

Quite likely although sometimes it can just be the seal needs changing, check for any play or roughness in the bearing.

change both the seal and the big bearing, no point buggering around with it, takes an hour or so as long as you have a hammer and 7mm allen key :beerjug:

If there is oil then the seal is a goner. Easy job. Check on the 'font of all wisdom' part of the site. The bearing may be OK. Check it carefully and if its OK then leave it alone.

If you don't have a 7mm allen key, you can use a Torx bit that fits well enough to do the job, if you have the right one handy. Can't remember which size but may save you searching for the correct allen key to buy.

If the seal is leaking it needs to be replaced so it doesn't matter about pulling the old seal out and then you can check the bearing. Once the seal has been removed you can see the bearing roller cage, check its all in one piece and that all the pins securing the cage are still in place. If it looks fine then just replace the seal .

Hi I had a look @ the wheel today and there is a slight play in the 6 oclock position no play @ the quarter to 3 one ,its deffo coming from the seal so either the bearing is on way out or the seal has given up , would pop the seal out but checked on motorworks site and theyre closed till jan , Im taking it to Jim downie on sat to get his verdict and also give the valves n throttle bodies a synch ..cheers for the replies :thumb2

Check the inner and outer races as well. This is typical of a failing bearing and is what causes the silver flakes on the magnet.

My 1995 R1100gs started puking oil a few years back, I made it home 200 miles or so

removed seal with a wood screw in it, and a vice grip, cleaned and looked over big bearing very well with a flashlight ( take your time on this step)

then new seal was a day or two later from local BMW dealer, $32 USD if I remember correctly.

tapped in easy with a bit of lube around its edge and a chunk of lumber.

that was 30,000 miles ago or more.
