Just walked into the garage to find oil on the floor and around the rear hub

Bike is 9 months out of warranty with 16000 miles

Not used off road.

Is this normal for the gasket to go so early and should it be covered by Bmw
Or shall I just bite the biscuit and do it my self.

I’m sure it will be cheaper to purchase a puller than get them to do the whole job and bend me over for payment

Outer seal,

If your careful and competant, DIY --

Inner seal or bearings - Mikeyboy

Or, if you're incompetent....Mikeyboy.....he did the outer on my hexhead last week after I spent ages trying to get the bastard thing out. In the time it took me to take my helmet and gloves off, he'd done it. :blast Bit of a ride for you though....the job's simple enough if you've got the knack. I obviously hadn't, I'd been using a small screwdriver to try to lever the seal out, Mike used a much bigger one! :)

So I’m assuming it’s seal “4”
Any specific tool needed to get to it or is it just removing the outer dust cover

If your assuming seal 4, it may not be ;)

My seal 4 was weeping, but because the hub had play the seal probably couldnt cope , hence the leak .

check for play first

If seal 4 leaks screw a self tapper into it and pull it out with molegrips / use the old seal once removed as an interface between the new seal and rubber mallet to tap it home.

Thanks

Does the cover pop off or screw off

Mikeyboy gave a heads-up regarding the hexhead seal removal, I assume it'll apply to yours too - be very careful screwing anything into the seal to remove it. The 'recommended' way is to drill a small hole into the seal - BMW use a special drill bit that can't go more than a mm or so past the metal insert - there's a bearing cage directly behind the seal that you really don't want to damage....

Don’t worry about the warranty if it’s just the outer seal BMW charge £99 to supply and fit so it’s under the £100 excess.

Wouldnt have helped you ..

Just taken the outer seal off
It’s soaked in oil
I thought it would be rubber!!
It’s some sort of man made fibre or felt.
