rear shock fitting problem

Hi

my rear shock went (standard showa on a 1150GS) so i dropped it in to ABE in Greewich to get it rebuilt. Now, i cant get the thing to fit back on the bike...

Rear wheel off, i can slot the shock back up where it came from. However the "sealing" bolt at the top of the shock (that keeps the gas in) sits against the metal shock mounting that's part of the bikes frame. This means that the shock sits at an angle which keeps it a good couple of inches away from the swing arm mounting - and its metal on metal, so it not going to budge.

I'm wondering whether they've given me the wrong shock back by mistake (mixed two bmw showa units up) or whether the sealing bolt is larger that the standard one.

The shock has 2 335 725 Showa 30172 written on it. Can anyone tell whether this is the right item?

And the bolt at the top is a torx that stands out maybe 5mm proud of the shock. can anyone tell whether this is correct?

Its such as simple job that i'm finding it hard to believe (this time) that its just me being thick... :(

help appreciated

jon

cm,

my standard shock has the same nos as yours - are you sure its 30172, not B0172? however, there is no sealing bolt visible, this must be something that the recon people have put in, either take it back or hacksaw it off.

hi

yes, sorry its B0172 and i checked the model number (725), so its the correct shock.

I had a look at a shock on one of steptoes 1150's and i couldnt make out a sealing bolt there either. However, its very hard to see when the shock is on the bike (you have to take the seat off and use a torch to look up into where the shock sits).

I'm not sure if the sealing bolt is something new or not - the shock has a flange type thing at the top which looks as if its there specifically for a bolt - and that looks very original. Also, the bolt is a torx with bmw stamped on it.

I really need to see another shock thats been taken off a GS; but i dont think there's much chance of that.

I'll drop the shock back into ABE and get them to put on a much lower profile bolt.

thanks

Showa

Sorry ,i have only just seen your thread.Same thing happened to me.Take it back to ABE and they will turn it all round so the little bolt is facing the back.I thought they would remember this as i had to make another trip up there to get it rectified.
I thought they had given me the wrong one back or i was doing something wrong.Bloody annoying as it cost me £140 as they made a new shaft as the old one was pitted, apparently. It also cost me in wasted time trying to fit it and another trip to Greenwich.

Hi Simon

Thanks, i came to this conculsion last night - there's a mark on the shock where the grub screw originally sat, so i assumed that's what happened.

Good to know that I'm not going insane... :)

Back i go to Greenwich...

Err, I've obviously missed something along the way.

Can I have contact details for ABE please and the cost of refurbishing a Showa shock. What's the turn-around time?

TIA

Adam :)
