Rear Subframe Corrosion

RT final drive of the RT were the paint is starting to lift before it’s had a winter, not got many pics to hand of it

Another picture showing the state and n which it was kept as I have a mild detailing addiction and my car and bikes are always immaculate and protected.

Paint lifting, not yet seen a winter, not the best picture but once it starts you can’t stop it

There was a resulting warranty spree totalling over £8k in value, all of it due to paint defects on the engine, chassis and running gear.

I’ve used a jet wash on all my bikes, along with SDOC100 and ph neutral cleaners, and will continue to do so. Never had any corrosion on any of my bikes, including the 5 LC GS/GSA’s.;)

I’ve not had corrosion, but had some paint defects

Current GSA is up to just under 10k miles now since collecting it in July and it’s, so far, faultless and the paint is fine.

So within the barrel of the drive, is there corrosion there too? It looks like there is...

No, that’s dirt, I was cleaning it the day after an Austrian trip, it was covered in clag at the time with a couple of weeks and 3000 odd miles of grime on it.

I’ll have to dig the list out but it had new engine, new FD, new rear wheel, swinging arm and other bits n bobs. Dealer was great and so were BMW.

S10

Sorry, but only a feckin idiot would think that.

So if I go and buy a £90,000 Porsche and drive it up the motorway sat on the arse of every car in front to get out the way.

By the time I got it home, the bonnet would have stone chips on it.

So I take it back to Porsche and say "your paint is shit, I want a respray as it should be able to cope with stones at 190mph"... WTF??

The centre stand is directly in line with the front wheel, on an adventure bike designed to go off road. So gravel, grit and stones are going to pound it every mile you ride. It's not structural damage, it doesn't impact on the design and purpose, it's just stone-chips.

Give it a lick of paint every now and then to keep it protected is the normal, maintenance thing to do. What do you expect?

Are you nuts? :D

Dont want to rock the boat but my tenere s 10 i bought in may now done 4000 miles used all weathers is unmarked including centre stand.:rob:rob:rob

Now that is unuasual...

It had a problem with the crank cases and the bolts under the sump were undoing on their own and leaking oil. Spent 6 weeks in the dealers with new bolts torqued up correctly and they loosened again. It was not corrosion or paint related but was a manufacturing defect.

Haha, I don’t normally knock you but you don’t keep your bikes long enough to corrode...
Although your washing technique is similar to mine, I like them to look good when they’re resting, ready for a big dirty possibly wet run when they next go out for a run.. :beerjug:

Getting back to the recent video, I don’t care what u do to parts of that rear subframe, you would be hard pushed to MAKE that corrode..
BMW, LISTEN TO THIS, it won’t cost you much to get this plastic coated..

Your 2014 Gsa continues to be pampered and washed with the same.
No corrosion so far on it anywhere

Normally 18 months to 2 years, but as some have reported corrosion as early as a few months into ownership, I must have just been lucky. ;)

That’s great to know, Steve, and throws out the whole “jet washing will destroy your bike” theory!

Anyways, I'll now be using a garage pressure washer on my Africa Twin from Saturday.

You've convinced me it's a good thing to do.

So I'm in. :D
