Rear uneven brake pad wear

I checked my rear brake pads on my 1150 to find that they were showing very uneven rates of wear. The right hand pad (looking forward) had at least 4mm left but the left hand was down to about 1mm if that. I popped them out and to find that the left hand also had a small hole clean through it so would be close to breaking up.

I have ordered new pads but what is causing this uneven rate of wear? What do I need to do to ensure my new pads won't suffer the same?

Rear pads.

This is normal on 1150's, it's caused by the action of the caliper which ahs the pistons in the ouiter part and pulls the inner pad part of the caliper across
aginst the disc on the "inner" side. This is the cause and rear inner pads should be checked regurly and save disc damage.

Have you checked the two halves of the caliper are free to slide i have checked my rear caliper on the 1150gs that i bought recently and one pin was seized solid it took a lot of heat to free the pin the pads were worn uneven but are not badly worn.so much for the dealer giving it a service when i bought it and they supplied a new MOT.i thought the rear brake wasnt very good compared to my r1100rt now i know why.bike is off the road till the pin rubber boots arrive one melted with the heat luckily that was the only damage.

What do I need to do to ensure my new pads won't suffer the same?

new ones actually come with 2 different pad thickness's to even out the wear. it doesn't seem to work.

Job's a good 'un

I replaced the pads today and before doing so I decided to strip and overhaul the caliper as per the document that Trev (Eliminator) posted. The document might seem a bit long winded but it is painstaking and very thorough and I found it to be an excellent guide for a job I had never done before. I now have a much greater understanding of how the whole rear caliper works, it is now immaculately clean as I have got rid of all the road crud and all of the moving parts that should be are now greased up with copper slip anti-sieze and the whole assembly now moves and operates very smoothly.

I took my time and the job took about two hours in total; I was very thorough and particular in the cleaning and I have the satisfaction of knowing that I have done a far more comprehensive job than a dealer would ever do
