Hi.

I've just cleaned the bike after a little trip away and noticed that the rear wheel has been in contact with the wheel cover at some point.

Is this normal, even if the rear suspension goes through its full range of travel?

I'm assuming this shouldn't happen. Is there a likely cause or anything I should check?

Thanks

Any chance your rear tyre is over size? Width/aspect ratio.

I am assuming the swing arm bearings are good, the wheel alignment is correct & the bike tracks straight.

It's a standard size Metzler Tourance on the rear, fitted new a couple of months ago.

I fitted Nushings to the swing arm a few months back. I've just been to check and definitely no play anywhere in the rear. 🤔

It's an 1150gs, do they have a bump stop? If they do, where should I look please?

Most shocks have a rubber doughnut on the piston rod that cushions the impact when the shock bottoms out

just had a look at a pic on the net as I don’t know the 1150 specifically, if it has a bump stop I looks to be inside a shroud

hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chip in

When you refitted the rear wheel, did you fit the washer, item 3. While it’s not necessary for non ABS bikes,(shim for the ABS sensor) it will shift the wheel 1-2mm left, which might be enough to clear that spot on the right side of cover.

Thanks.

I don't recall seeing a shim (I've had the wheel off a few times). I'll whip the wheel off tomorrow and have a look. The bike has ABS.

If it has ABS the shim should be fitted. I think its purpose is to centralise the disc in the caliper, because the disc is slightly offset by the ABS speed sensor disc on bikes with ABS fitted.

Will I have to re-shim the ABS sensor?
The washer will take the ABS signal ring further away from the end of the sensor.

So probably not, but it depends on whether you have shims fitted under the sensor. If you have then you will be removing shims not adding to maintain the correct sensor gap.
