Rear Wheel - Trouble?????

i have looked at the various threads but they don't quite answer my concerns.

Symptoms: variable amount of play in the rear wheel from none at all to 2 - 3mm when held at 12 and 6 o'clock position. Also when there is play i can here a clonking sound when riding very slowly <10mph. I also think that i can feel the clonk if I lightly touch the rear brake.

But as i say sometime the wheel seems to be rock solid no play whatsoever. Further there is no straight answer as to when there will or won;t be play. that is it does not seem to come about when the bike is hot, or disappear when cold.

THe model is an 04 with a mere 30k ont he clock. last year i had the FD oil replaced at service, and I asked for the bearing to be checked.

Today on hot roads, good tarmac, good tyre pressures etc the back end suddenly lost all grip as i tipped into a right hander at about 70mph. It then fishtailed ac ouple of times before coming back into shape. When i stopped the play had reappeared, and there after I just couldn't get any decent feel in bends (or was that my mind just playing tricks)

So please is the amount of play a fixed thing or a variable one. Will get the bike back to the dealer for a check, but lost all confidence in the rear end today and ended up riding even more like a pleb than usual.

thanks

youve def got a prob matey, should only be the very slightest of detectable play,i reckon your final drive is shot,er you have checked the wheel bolts havent you

BAck the calliper off and check that the Alloy brake disc carrier is not loose on the stanless axle shaft!

I had an 04 one do that and it was quite scarey to ride at all

backing the calliper off takes pressure off the disc

The only other thing I can think of is a bearing cage breaking up and the bearings moving out of place!

Thanks chaps

Cheers for the feedback, will get it to the dealership as soon as i can. It is due in on the 15th june for its service but don't want to be withouot until then.

Aye wheel bolts are tight, and logically it didn't do it until last year and then after the FD oil was changed allwas ok, but the straight forward fact is for 27k it didn;t do it, so it can jolly well stop doing it now. Or slapped legs and sent to bed with no tea.

Wonder if I can pursuade the other FD (the Finace Director - She Who Must Be Obeyed) that a replacement is long overdue
