Rebuild project, advice needed

i have just bought my first GS, an 05 model, unfortunately on closer inspection its a bit mangier than i`d have liked however i`m keen on a project so she`s now reduced to a metal carpet on the garage floor.

so 1st question, has anyone repainted their engine? if so care to share the how to etc.

2nd, any advice on end cans? i want to ditch the 1/4 ton OE part!

What does the engine need, I have stripped everything but havnt split the crankcases.

the paint has bubbled and flaked in every nook an cranny, (fine etc) with the usual white powder from aluminum.

I want to strip the paint, prime it with the right stuff and apply the proper paint, then paint the rocker covers a different colour. I`m just at the point of dropping the engine out, just waiting for some pliers to take the clips off the throttle bodies

all without taking the engine apart !!

todays question? i want to change the bars, for some reason mine has harley ape hangers!!! is it possible to remove the threaded inserts for fixing the handguards so i can reuse them???
