Hi all,
Had a bit of an experience this morning. Arrived at work and stopped the bike (1150 ADV 02 reg) as you do and thought this reeks of petrol (obviously not noticeable when blatting down the motorway still half a-kip) .

Look round bike and find the right hand side of the engine and gearbox with a liberal coating of fuel (removed fag from mouth and took a pace back).

Anyhow somewhat concerned, so straight on the dog to OCEAN BMW in Plymouth.

Conversation generally as follows.

Me “ Hi, I have fuel Pi**ing out of right hand side of bike all over hot engine, trousers boot etc and being as its just been serviced wondered if you have disturbed anything? ”

Ocean “No nothing like that, we have had a couple do this, don’t worry none have blown up”

Me “Good, But I don’t particularly want to be the first”

Ocean “it’s not the injector it’s the 2 pipes behind it that go into the two rubber hoses”

Me (now stood by bike) “ok, I can see them but they feel dry?”

Ocean (new voice on the phone) “ well first off wash the bike to get the fuel off so it doesn’t stain, then give the two clips on those pipes a good nip. We know it’s a problem an BMW have put out a recall and as soon as we have the bits we will give you a call”

Me “ok but in the meantime what’s the problem and is it likely to get worse?”

Ocean “it is probably where the joints have dried out over the weekend”

Me “yea, yea, never mind the b*****ks is it safe to ride?”

Ocean “Well if nipping those two clips up dose it then yes, if not bring it in and we will have a look”

Anyway have nipped up the clips with a set of pincer crimps so will see if that dose the trick if not guess who’s going to Ocean tomorrow.

Now call me a sceptic but if BMW know there is a problem with this, especially as it involves fuel, rider and very hot bits being in close proximity why the F**k don’t they let us know.

So to everyone out there I would check your bike for this problem especially if it’s a 1150 ADV. Lastly if anyone else has had this experience let me know what happened.

Cheers

Kas..this is a well known problem and has been mentioned many times on both this board and over on Advrider.......it is i suppose something that a lot of people miss because they don't associate it with themselves until it happens to them.

There is a recall out to replace the QD's on the fuel pipes..it certainly should have been done at the last service assuming that was within the last 10 months or so.......it rather sounds like your dealer didn't do the job I'm afraid.

Did you get any staining on the engine??

If you did, you should stand a very good chance of ggetting it sorted under warrenty as the dealer hasn't done the recall work.

Yep!

Happened on my 03 GS last year in the cold. Petrol fountain out the side of the bike, the nice man from BMW Assist came and fixed it, but I think I posted a similar post at the time. There are plenty of other posts on the same subject.

1. Scary
2. Annoying
3. Dangerous as there has been one documented fire on a GSA on the Adv rider board.

Make sure you wash the gear box area etc as the petrol with turn a silver engine yella.

As I have an '02 Adv I'd like to know what these hose clips are replaced with?

Jubilee clips? or something snazzier?

Any particular size? (I'd like to buy 'preventitive maintainance' clips before I go home)

Cheers

Mines in now!

My Gs is currently at Wollastons having the recall work done now!

Discovered the pipes leaking a couple of days ago but unfortunately it had already stained the engine!

It wasn't a bad leak but it was weeping all day long and gradually got worse!

I was unaware of any recall until I read about it on this BB!

I was suprised that when the dealer sold me the bike in February it wasn't picked up then!

Will the new bits be any better?

Pre QD too

It happened last year on my '01 1150gs too. and that hasn't got QD fittings.

The petrol really came out at quite a rate, and the engine was hot, so I was expecting fireworks.

When I took it to the dealer for a check over they couldn't find anything obvious like loose clips, and it hasn't done it again...... yet!!!

SpookY

I had a similar problem on my F650 Dakar. I found the clip on the fuel pipe to the top of the fuel sender had not been squeezed up, most likely from the factory, and was leaking fuel so I replaced it with a jubilee clip. I don't know if any other F650 riders have found this problem.

I was told by BMW engineer who I trust, that it is in fact the rubber O rings that are at fault and a batch of them are prone or have actualy rotted and hence the QD leaks. The joints are another issue and yes all this is picked up on the service schedule if nothing happens first. I guess you gotta look at how good your dealer is. BVM got it all changed and sorted on the 600 mile service. TOP Blokes

Have found out that a recall that was issued in April this year to deal with the problem.

This work should be undertaken by your dealer. Mine (OCEAN) said it should have been done at the last service 2 weeks ago but they didn’t have the kit. (ummmm). I also asked why we the owners had not been informed of a situation which has the potential to be bloody dangerous. Apparently notification will be slow as it has to be done via the DVLA (this is according to Ocean) as it affects ALL bikes from 2000 (once more according to Ocean).

If you are not sure what recalls are outstanding for yours bike call BMW customer services (very helpful) with your chassis number and they will tell you. There are 3 for the Adventure as far as I know. Re route rear break hose, sharp engine cover and this fuel one.

In the meantime nipping up the two clips with a pair of flat edged pincers and replacing the seals in the QRC’s should get you sorted, until your dealer can fix it.

Lastly When you get Mr BMW to sort the recall ask him to change the hose as well so at least you are starting completely fresh and not with new clips on a pre crimped hose.

Petrol Staining

Anyone know if MBW are accepting responsibility for remedying the staining on the gearbox etc.? If not what are they saying about the situation which is surely their fault...poor o-ring quality, poor quality clips etc...

...And now me, too...

This is getting silly... Fired the bike up this morning as per normal and whilst donning gloves, etc. SWMBO sez "Er, your bike appears to be leaking..."

Sure enough, a steady drip, drip, drip of go-juice emanating from the lower of the two hoses that straddle the r/h side injector link. :(

No time to faff around sorting it there and then plus my attitude since the recent coil-related shenanigans have left me with a "if it goes phut then so be it" attitude towards the fscking thing.

Rode it about five miles and then stopped, checked it over and it's stopped leaking (for now).

It's due a 12k service real soon, now. I'll ask them to sort it then.

Grrr!

Rik.

odd my adv got recalled three months after I bought it (that would be end of feb) for new fuel lines clips.

Yeh

I've got bad stains on the RHS, (gearbox housing), and now LHS, (the plastic bit that covers the starter motor).

All SPC did was to "nip the clips" - (no offence to the Japs)
and said "we put new O rings in as a matter of course on the first, (6,000 mile), service"

Cannot remove the staining - have tried everything

Para

Aceton is said to do the trick - just don't go too hard, or the silver paint will come off too... So off to find the ol' lady's nail varnish remover!

This advice is worth exactly what you paid for it. In no way shall I accept responsability for any damage that blah, blah, blah... :D

Solution

The solution is simple, obtain a quantity of fuel hose clips with screws to tigten them, your BMW dealer will stock them and they are pennies, well at least Rainbow does, and replace every fuel hose fixing, job done.

leaky

Same thing happened to me this weekend on my 2001 GS

Was off to Devon, and stopped at the post box 2 miles up the road to post a letter.
Real strong whiff of petrol, and steady drip of fuel was coming from right side of tank onto exhaust cross pipe.

Drip drip... hiss hiss..... bleeding great!

Went home.. lifted tank then started engine and immediately fuel pissed out from one of the pipes on the tank where the pathetic crimped clips had gone weak. What a crap design...

Found an old jubilee clip and it solved the prob... So set off for Devon an hour and a half late.

Really good components... not, on such a critical part.

Are GS's made by the makers of Trabants or something?

Will
