My maxtor shared storage has just given up. I need to replace it with a 2tb mirrored nas server (total 4tb) suitable for all of the usual. What do you think ?
There are a lot better than this, (QNAP always get a good rep), but I use one of these Netgear ReadyNasDuo's, had it a couple of years, does what I need it to. They are relatively easy to set up with a bit of effort, not cutting edge stuff though.
There is a good support forum, and they always seem to have a free drive promo on as well, although it's available empty as well.
drobo are great (I have one of the firewire 800 units) but they're crazy expensive for what they offer.
For the price of one diskless drobo FS, I got a base model netgear readynas, 3 2tb drives and still had a few quid left over. Unless you're launching rockets or computing the meaning of life, the readynas will serve you well.
Edit: I should have also added that I use the readynas for backup and to stream 1080p to my TV. No problems.
I've been using Qnap at home for the last three years (the one I have at the moment is my second one) and they are really, really good.
I use it for backup and video streaming to the PS3.
Another vote for QNAP. However I think is is more than just NAS. It's a fully fledged linux based server (if only I knew what to do )
Currently used for all backup data.
Media streaming music, photos and video
Web server, currently hosting two public websites with a couple more to follow.
Just managed to get a mail-server working on there.
Another one that can recommend QNAP, although something that will work out a hell of a lot cheaper at the moment is to make your own from a HP Microserver. HP are offering £100 cash refund when you buy one till the end of March, so it will work out as approximately £130. Bargain !!!
There's not a lot it can't do eg backing up data, streaming content, automatic downloading via its own download manager, to wireless surveillance via IP webcams, iTunes server etc etc etc.
I have a 1TB DS109j (cheap version), they go up in size, no of disks etc but the operating system (via web browser) are all similar.
After a few near misses with 1tb single drives and a lot of research we opted for the Drobo S and filled it with 5 x 2tb drives and an eSata connection. The initial outlay was expensive but we now have piece of mind that our photos and workflow are better protected as you can have dual disk redundancy and they are hot swappable. You can also mix disks in the bay, speed, size, brand etc. Amazing piece of kit.
I use a Thecus N5200 - 5 x 1Tb disks. Can take 2Tb disks which means your looking at 10 Tb raw JBOD. I use Raid 5 as it speed up access for all my ... errrr.... media
Works a treat - is linux based with web front end. Not cheap but does the job and if a disk does fail, rebuild is automatic when you hot swap out the dead disk. Does all the normal network protocols and has the ability to FTP volumes out to an FTP server of your choice to ensure back up of those all important "photos" on a different box.
Mine just sits in the garage and does the what it says on the tin.
Decided to go with the 2 x 2tb buffallo linkstation. "v" model. This will do the job in the interim. I would of course prefer a 5 bay hot swap raid 5 setup but the buffallo with its updated performance speeds should suffice. Thanks for all of the suggestions and for that link to that review site.
