I'm after advice for a laptop, dont mind secondhand, budget circa £250 that runs windows 7.Dont need a cd/dvd drive as ive an external one, it does need a sd slot and a couple of usbs, preferably usb2.
A ssd hard drive i think is a must, or the ability to rip the normal hd out and fit a ssd type.
I dont want summat that in constant need of fettling, i wouldnt mind an I pooter, but i find it seems to be uncompatible with certain stuff, so i'll stick with windows 7.
I dont need a massive hd as ive several plug in drives via usb and a couple of 64gb usb pens, and a couple of large 32gb sd ,class 10 cards.
I dont want a massive screen, perhaps under 13" so it fits in the bike topbox, ive used an eepc901 for years, but its struggling with windows 7.Thats got a 32gb ssd,2gig ram and 1.6gig processor, but its strugglin man.
what do you know?:thumb2

Multiply your budget by a factor of 4 and buy a Macbook Air. If you really must have Windows 7, install Virtual Box and run Windoze in that. Simples.... :)

Its like buying a ferrari and driving it in first gear, cant see the point.
Ive a got a 2tb LACIE with shed load of films on it,which is an HDMI full hd movie player, its great, last year my boy plugged in his macbook pro thing, it completely fecked its filing system, right up, i guess its cos i loaded the films under windows and later i tried to have a tidy up with a mac, windows 7 fixed the filing system, and all is well, now the mac is banned from it.

Thats not normal behaviour from a Mac. I have all my external drives formatted for Windows, just in case I need to trade files with some poor sap who doesn't have a mac.

Have a look at a used IBM Thinkpad X61, I have one of these as a Diagnostics machine. I picked up a core 2 duo with 8GB RAM, 160GB Disk and 9 cell battery for £99. I dropped a spare SSD in it, and it does the job nicely. The 12.1" version would do the job nicely. Mine has no problem with Windows 7 at all.

I've got one of those (or very similar)....got it for the same sort of price, reconditioned and formatted on Ebay for about the same price.

Plenty good enough laptop, and the metal case rather than nasty plastic makes it nice and solid, so it's durable enough for the kids to be let loose with it :)

I hate the little red nipple pointing device, just can't get on with it, but the track pad is fine, or I use a usb mouse.

Thanks Bill

I got sick of Windows computers failing, so last year bought a MacBook Pro and have not looked back. Used MacBooks can be £500 if you don't mind a bit of cosmetic marking.
My Samsung Netbook (good quality for a windows pooter) is fixable for not much cost but I can't be bothered. Files and data are too important to waste when it fails yet again.

Ive had no real bother with my eepc901,just put windy 7 on it and it hates it,its like watching paint dry.still looking.
Any links to this x61?
I looked at at new PC but there all Windows8,I dunno if it will take a downgrade to windy 7?

eblag

Ive won one,its got the core duo with 3 GB and 250 gig hard drive,80 quid with dock,I bought a new batt for 23 quid, lets see what the post delivers!
They also do a 250gb SSD too, interesting!I'll keep ya posted!thanks Pauly.

well its arrived today

So far im impressed, Bills right the red nipple thing is a pain in the arse, but for £100 I got the laptop, the x6 ultrabase docking station with the dvd/cd drive and a brand new battery.
The keyboard is nice, the actual machine flies, I was moving 6 films at a time today with no problems whatsoever.
So ive just ordered a 250gb ssd hard drive for it and some more ram to take it up to 4 gig, which I think is the max.
The hard drive I have in it at the mo is rather noisy, but that's gonna go anyways.
Ive seen a 1.5tb drive advertised for it!. For the money I'm well pleased, the Lenovo company's website is easy to use,so I'm happy bunny. It does all I wanted and more, thanks lads.
I'll keep you posted on the ssd hd upgrade.

Ooooh....I used to love the nipple thing on the Thinkpads. I really really don't get on with trackpads and now that my work has switched to Dell's, everything's feeling cheaper and nastier.

+1 for any Lenovo ThinkPad. Mine was a small, light and strong X200.
