Red triangle warning light

1200 GS (2005) mileage 54000 (yep I use my toy!)

In last few runs the red warning triangle has lit up after 3 to 15 miles riding. No other warning lights. If I stop the bike and restart, the light will stay off and then reappear after 3/15 miles!

The bike seems to run normally despite the warning.

Anyone come across a similar problem or any thoughts on what may be causing it?

As far as I can make out from the 2008 manual, the red triangle light is a 'General warning' light usually association with one of three other symbols:

(1) Oil (insufficient pressure)

(2) Battery (electrical - no charge)

(3) Tyre pressure (yours by year does not have tyre pressure sensors, I assume, so we can discount that one).

If it lights red and flashes - along with an oil can symbol - it's oil

If it simply lights red (no flashing) - along with a battery symbol - it's battery

It also lights every time on start up - with no additional symbols - and should go out. If it doesn't go out it means there is a fault for which there is no corresponding warning symbol, ie. it's a 'General fault' warning.

Either way .... Get it sorted.

Look in owner's manual (you do have one, I assume) for further information and instructions.


PS I am looking at the 2008 manual. From memory my 2006 bike also has a red warning triangle if the ABS is dodgy (or the computer thinks it's dodgy). I seem to recall this was backed up by the brake symbol.... It's in the manual, for sure.

Oil...recently changed and showing just below maximum on sight glass

Battery...on Optimate between runs and starts on the button each time

Temperature....normal

ABS ..have had the traditional problem with ABS because of lever but sorted and no problem since.

Light comes on in normal start sequence and goes off as it should. It is only after some miles that the light comes on again. If I stop bike and restart, light stays off...for another few miles!! Very annoying/worrying.

As I said, no other warning light comes on which appears to suggest some other general fault. I have the handbook but it gives no indication of other possible faults!

Any other insights would be appreciated.

ABS sensor rings dirty?

One very worn tyre and one new???? (Differences in diameters may make rotational speeds outside parameters after a certain speed) Thats what happens with My Merc 190 I changed the rears to a higher profile and she kicks in the warning at 61 mph Stop and switch off ignition and go again it's all clear till 61 mph put a set of matched standard rims and tyres on and it's absolutely fine

Mototech may have the diagnostics to read the stored fault codes and tell you exactly what is wrong

Or for that Matter the Boys at Hurts motorrad but it used to be stupidly expensive to hook up the comet system for a 5 min diagnosis!

It makes things much much easier to sort when you can have a root cause to work from

If you know anyone with a GS911 ask them to connect up and have a look at the error codes, else ask your dealer to do it.

New set of rubber going on this week. However the light kicking in does not seem to be speed sensitive so maybe unlikely to be variation in rotational speeds?

Aye but ya never know round Saintfield there's all sort of strange lay lines and earth forces up there!

OK, that's more info than you first post.

It can only be showing a 'General fault' with no parallel symbol. A plug into a diagnostic tool should show up the problem, assuming it is stored in the bike's memory. Either that or it's just an erroneous genearl fault message, with no corresponding parllel problem.

A few minutes on the diagnostics machine should sort it out.

I think the red traingle is oil pressure rather than an oil level warning (when oil related of course!).

Give me a call sometime & run the bike down, we can stick it on the computer & see what it says.
