I am in the process of refitting the RH Cylinder head on my 05 1200GS and have a problem.
The cam chain will not reach the cam !
Dont know why, i checked and rechecked everything.
Chain guides are OK, Chain is OK.
The engine turns easily by hand but there is no way the sprocket will reach the camshaft.
Anyone done a head on one of these ?
Thanks.

Chain is a straight run, tensioner bolt is out, If i could get the sprocket on it would be as tight as a bow string.

???????????????

WTF

???????????????

Hmm the only thing I can think of is that the chain has a peak on the crank were maybe it's bunched up?

Set the camshaft to tdc then stick a screwdriver thru the cam sprocket and rotate the engine fully 2 turns see if any slack appears?

Hi,

i had the same problem once when i rebuild a 12gs engine.
the tips is that you must engage properly the timing chain in the chain tensioners
a little view is better than a long BLABLA:

Salut et Bienvenue Chez Nous

Si je vous Comprends ~~~~

C'est a dire Il faut mettre le Chaîne en place correctement

C 'etait exactement comment je crois les probleme arrivent

Je pense que le Chaîne ne rester pas en place correctement, sur le pignon au centre moteur

Still stuck

Thanks for advise, Merci pour la réponse.
Still no luck.
Everything seems to be in order the engine turs by hand.
I made spacers the same heigth as the head 89.5mm and assembled it all as a test. I put the sprocket on with the aid of a jack fixture I made up.
The chain is mad tight.

Pat just leave the spocket with a screwdriver through so it can spin without spinning the camshaft

Rotate the engine a few times continuously going the same direction letting the cam chain turn the sprocket as it feels like it I reckon it's sagged of the guide and you can't pick it up

DO NOT PULL HARD if it gets tight reverse direction Otherwise you may break a chain guide and it's a box off to strip and rebuild

Pictures ~~~~ 1000 words

See if this makes sense it's drawn with a view from the rear or the right cylinder

Jay

Have you done the lefthand head too ? The slide rails are identical left/right, but the chain tensioner guides are different. Any chance you got them mixed up ?

No did not touch the LH or the tensioners. Dropped a valve on a track day.
My fault I think too much engine breaking.
Come to think of it there were loads of early 90's Jap stuff there and non of them dropped a valve.

Got it,

Got it. the chain was loose at the back of the drive sprocket, thats why the engine turned over OK
I will get this engine together now.
Thanks guy,s
There is a pint of guinness here in Galway with your name on it.

Knew it hd to be something simple :aidan

Option one then If you are ever doing one again then leave the cam sprocket in the chain with a cable tie and a nut or a spanner to keep the chain pulled tight

Did you check the valves in the guides for play before you bolt it all up tight and go mad on again Leave clearance on the open side of allowances rather than tight and use 2 feeler blades! :thumb

Will do Jay, I have an 06 GSA as well and did the tappets and end float recently.
I should know what I am doing being an engineer and having my own toolroom.
But I go rightly stuck on this problem.
Releived to have the solution, everyone here was scratching there head including my wife.
I am putting a complete low milage RH engine from an 06 on to the GS.
Thanks again,
PS: Are you going on the Donegal run this weekend ?
