Hi ,

Just wondering if anyone might have any advice regarding gearing the 150gs.
I find when I'm riding around here in japan I very rarely am able to use 6th gear. Anything under 100kph really lugs the engine , The smoothness isn't really a consideration as at that speed 5th is a little buzzy but ok. I'd ideally like to be able to putter along at speeds 80-120 in 6th as there is a noticeable difference in smoothness. Having come from Harleys over the past 20 years or so I guess I really do ride like an old tart - I have actually been called much worse. Fully expecting the usual 'buy a harley' posts but I really like my GS :)
Roads here are great for 80-100 commuting with very little traffic - hellish expensive if caught over 140or so. Any help much appreciated.
Have read final drive swap threads on adv riders but just a tad - read overwhelmingly so - technical for me.

Fit the final driver from an R850GS if you can get one. Lowers all the gears & will also close up the huge gap between 5th & 6th if you have the overdrive 6th gear.

Swapping FD's is not hard, 60 minutes max if you clean & lube the splines while you're in there.

Yup, what he said. Andy Malton has fitted an 850R bevel box (aka rear drive and aka final drive:rolleyes: ) to his 1150. I've ridden it - loses a bit of top end but goes like a rocket - 2nd gear easy wheelies and 3rd if you try hard;) :)

Sounds like you need one:thumb

gearing

The Dr beat me to it,but I have a bevel from an r850r fitted to my GS,and it the best thing you can do if you do a lot of town and twisty roads like I ride,it makes the bike accelerate much better and makes the 6th/E gear much more usable.I can pull away in second easy and then it's just a case of using 5th and E.Once you are doing are about 30mph in 5th it will pull like a train all the way to 80mph it's great to ride,it's almost like having an automatic bike you just don't have to change gear although the down side is that you lose about 20mph on the top end,but then above 90 on a GS it's not much fun with the wind factor it still cruises at 80mph comfortably.Well worth doing for you.Plus you have benifit of a lower first gear. If you want something a little nearer to the 1150gs gearing use the bevel from an 850gs,but they are very very rare in 33/11 mine is a 37/11 standard 1150's are 31/11.Andy

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated. Sounds like the 850 final drive will be just the ticket. I like the sound of an automatic bike - just my speed :)
Just as an afterthought , you wouldn't happen to have any leads to where I might be able to get hold of one or how much the swap is likely to cost?
All probably irrelevant as I'm in the far east.

Again thanks for the replies. Ive just visited the local dealer and had him look up the suggested parts. He tells me that according to the factory dealer cd here in japan the r850r drive has a 34/11 ratio whereas the '94- r1100r has the 37/11 final drive. As this appears to be at odds with Andys' post I wonder what the heck is going on ? Anyone know if the 34/11 ratio will accomplish what I mentioned in the original post ?
all the best ,
