A small low drop shouldn't hurt the helmet, keep it and use it. They would like you to think that it need's replacement, it's after all another sale. 
If you'ed had a spill at 100mph and hit the kerb, then yes, lose it, but you ain't, so don't worry.
Of course, a "normal" spill and the helmet will hold up I'm sure, but again, have an off at 100mph head first into a tree, and the last thing on your mind is "Will the helmet hold up"....
This is my opinion of course, and there are no guarantees

Although I agree in principle with the 'it's only £300 for a new lid.. what's your head worth' brigade, if there's now't up with the lid bar cosmetics, your bonce is just as well protected as it was before you dropped the lid. If it's any consolation, I'm still wearing mine.... Also, if it IS damaged, can you claim on any household insurance you may have???

I suppose some bright spark here could work out how much damage occurred to the helmet by calculating the height of the drop by the weight of the helmet and come up with the likely impact
Like a previous poster said - a helmet is made to withstand greater forces than a drop from seat/top box. My view is now creeping towards keep it...

I bought to Tour X's just before a big tour last year.

IIRC diRe did a test a while back and the outcome was something like, from seat height without gloves, phone, camera etc etc stuffed inside it, it should be ok. Personally, if it's only the paint that's been damaged I'd still use it, but any suspicion of the shell having damage ................. And I'd take it to have the Arai test at some point when it's convenient.
If the area it hit the stones / ground is clear of paint, rub it with a cotton cloth. If there's any damage to the Carbon / Kevelar / Fibreglass structure, the cotton should pick it up.

I think ride magazine did a test a year or so back and concluded a quality helmet would be fine
Personally I would only replace if I wanted a new one and needed the excuse to convince the wife!

I sort of did that with an AGV once, it was mint and unmarked but I fancied a new lid.
Sat in kitchen cleaning it when I suddenly exclaimed " Oh no, that not good, I bought this 6 years ago and there is an expiry date in it for safety reasons. I should have replaced it nearly a year ago"

A small bird of some sort glanced off my helmet; it's beak or some other hard appendage may have damaged the helmet. Should I replace it - the helmet not the small bird. 
so if my helmet falls off the bike, i should just buy a new one?

While off roading or on the motorway you get a stone thrown up and it chips the helmet would you bin it then too?
and the chances are a stone is traveling with a lot more force than a drop of 3'

Of course you should get a new bike. If a bike lets a helmet fall off it, how do you rate its chances of preventing a much heavier rider falling off??
