Replacement for Zumo 390LMS

I don't have any battery issues - I have the unit cradle hard wired - never used it off the bike other than to input routes at home.

I have more UK trips planned and too plan so I may just make do with it for this riding season.... XT1 looks favourite though..

I’m more interested as to what a track is? If I plot a Basecamp and send it to my device. That’s it, there is no track just the route displayed. Is the track an alternative to the route?
Not used Basecamp for ages, but normally both routes and tracks are exported, others have given good examples.

On all my Garmins you have a "route" app and a "track app", simply go to the track app and select "show on map", at this point it will show the track overlaid on both the map screen whilst you are looking at the route, and when you are actually using the route and moving along.

If you have time checking the route on the device against the track is best, and then adding shape points to sto any deviations - on holiday plans I may investigate with street view, and using MRA allows you to compare what it thinks a Garmin and a Tom Tom will do, often picking up any such odditied before you even send the route, but always check on your own device.

Either way once rolling you can see on the screen if the "route" tries to deviate from what you saw when planning, this can be handy for trying to keep groups together, this worked well on trips with Mrs as if we got a seperated in towns (a high risk area for slight variations) we would not end up waiting / try to catch up with the other person who has ended up ona different path as we agreed to always follow the track when the route deviated from it.

The route has the advantage of stop (via) points for planned food / drink / fuel, and I like to use them for the "distance / time" to the next point so I can see at a glance how far I am from my next "planned" (a plan is always needed, otherwise you have nothing to deviate from)

Well worth really playing with routes and tracks, and comparing them, and then using them locally on roads and routes you know well, rather than being confused and pissed off when you go on tour with the "fucking sat nav", they are a tool, and like alltools they do more harm than good in the hands of someone that does not understand what the tool does, how to use it and its limitations.....

...and every nav device / application I have used has had these, and each time I get a new one I find some things work better and others cause new issues for me.

Talking of issues, the tracks on the XT(1) are narrow on the screen and hard (impossible) to see if the route covers them - no problem you think, unless you have missed where they diverge and are carrying on of the track, anyway it can be fixed;

Another tip - I had issues with Garmin explore, ignoring the fact Garmin will gather data on everywhere you go, how fast you are travelling etc. it stopped me easily showing the track, and you (supposedly) had to create a "selection", move the route into the selection and then you could choose to display the tracks for the "selection", but it never worked for me, the options to "show track on map" just vanished never to be seen again, but setting up an XT it will try and default to setting up Garmin explore and they make it fucking hard to undo, here is how...

My Zumo 660 has never deviated from the route I have sent to it. I plot in Basecamp and send to the device. It has then over the last 12 or so years followed exactly what I have plotted. It has never tried to freelance a route, just followed the route I send to it. This is probably why I don’t understand plotting a track as well as plotting a route.
