Having spent the past two months commuting with a lazy left indicator switch that only works about 20% of the time I decided to take the switchgear apart and investigate. All you need is a size 10 torx driver and a size 7 (make sure the number 7 has a thin shaft as one of the screws is hard to get at).
Apart from the rubber protectors being knackered I couldn't see anything that could be easily repaired, so I conceded that I'd need to replace the whole switchgear. As a result I found out a couple of points that may save people some hassle and/or money.
Mine is an 06 with only two buttons, ABS and TRIP however when I removed the cover I noticed that I also had an un-used button which worked the hazard lights (the earlier models had a hazard light switch) also, the grey indicator button is easily removed meaning I could also shop for an earlier switchgear with the orange indicator button and swop it across. The cheapest one available on ebay was from a 2010 bike (£47 - maybe because 2010 owners have not had worn out switches yet so demand is low) and it had 4 buttons with ESA, INFO, ASC/ABS. So I bought it and simply un screwed the cover and changed the buttons and the front cover for the ones off mine (so back to having 2 buttons instead of 3). Everything works as it should although I've not tested the ABS switch as I have no need to disable the ABS and I don't actually know how the button is meant to work.
I guess this means that most switch gear is backward compatible. However note that the 3rd button no longer works the hazard lights so a 2010 unit may not be appropriate for a pre-2006 bike. I am now going to take one of the working micro-switches from the old switchgear and solder it in place of the right indicator one as that is also on its way out.
