Somewhere out there.
Am I right in thinking that a cam knocking on a cold start is usual on a 1150 GS. When I got the bike it was running 10/40 fully synth which I changed to their correct grade 20/50
Since then when cold the rh pot knocks a bit on cold start. After a minute most, maybe less I haven't timed it it stops or if I pick the revs up from the fast idle it also goes away.

When the engine is warm it sounds fine and runs fine.

sounds like a cam chain tensioner draining of oil,?

The time lag is the oil priming til it pushes forward again, seem to remember there being different types, some rattle, some dont

Do you leave it on the Sidestand? There have long been concerns (neither proven nor disproven as I understand) of oil draining away from the R/H Cylinder if the bike is put on (and left on) sidestand.

If you have moved to a thinner oil that might contribute to the (unproven) issue.

I don't no. I usually park up leave it on sidestand for 10 mins to check oil level. whilst I de kit and open the garage etc. It is the parked on the center stand in the garage.
I hadn't started the bike for a couple of months due to one thing or another and did so tonight. The rh pot took longer to fire than the left and sounded a bit rough until some oil got pumped around. Sounded sweet as one there was some heat in it. Can't wait to have the time to get back out on it!

On the sidestand to check the oil? Have i been doing it wrong? I always check it when on the centre stand! If you're right then i've got an awful lot of oil in my bike :D

Can someone confirm the 'correct' way to check the oil level...

Dare I suggest that maybe being on the sidestand for 10 mins would allow all the hot, thin, oil to drain to the left hand side. Subsequently putting it on the centre stand would allow oil to drain into the sump, but, crucially, would not move oil back into the head of the RH pot.

I would suggest putting the bike onto it's centre stand immediately (whilst still hot), and putting it onto the sidestand later if needed (once the oil is cold it is far less likely to drain away).

As said before, nothing is proven, just my thoughts.

Ok, maybe not. Borderraider not 'Moderating' this thread then.

Ah the joys of being 'sent to Coventry' but only in the one class :D

To confirm I leave it on the sidestand for 10 mins then onto center stand when parked up. I always have a quick look at the sight glass fore and aft a ride hence the comment.
Jiff.

Camchain tensioner problem affected the left hand cylinder and there is an upgraded tensioner available to cure that knocking noise that occurs til the old style tensioner is supplied with oil. Didn't cause a problem on right hand side as tensioner sits below and doesn't drain oil out.
Could it be the throttle body bushes gone in right side? That makes a bit of a tapping noise, but not sure that it would disappear once warm?

Thanks for the reply cam chain replaced on the left and tbs refurbed last Sept.
it's odd as the revs are low it makes the noise. If I pick the revs up it goes. I think it is definatly oil pressure related as greater revs would push more oil up into the head I guess?
When its warm no such noise. It has never got any worse.
I am thinking and hoping its just one of the noises and just get on and ride it.

Sounds like piston slap to me.

Most air cooled engines have piston slap to a lesser or greater degree when cold. The clearance tolerances are generally larger because of the difference in expansion/contraction compared to a water cooled engine. When the piston warms up it expands in the cylinder bore and the noise disappears.

I believe the reason for leaving on the side stand for 10 minutes or so before checking the oil (on the centre stand!), is to allow the oil in the oil cooler to drain back into the sump.
