rhs heated grip not working

DIY Repair Easy ish

Found resistance wire had failed where its crimped to the flexible wires under the grip. Made new joint with fuse wire and soldered up. Used self-amalgamating tape brought from this site to bind over resistance wire, then used hair spray to lubricate when fitting new Renthal grip.

Biggest problem was separating the old rubber grip from the plastic twist grip it seems on 07 models these parts are fully bonded together. Ended up having to shave off loads of small bits of rubber with craft knife, very tedious to do and all the time risk of damaging the resistance wire.

Anyway job done and both hands now warm as toast.

new heated grip design on new gs?

Just repaired two heated grips. One on a 04GS. the wire had burnt through on the right hand grip. I bought some .23mm wire off ebay for a quid and used about an inch to fill the gap. this heated grip had the grooves for the wire to run in and was very easy. the second repair was on my brothers 10 plate Adventure. this bike had the grip glued firmly on to a plastic film heater which looks like a circuit board (so they have completely changed the design of the heated grips for the TU - may be also the MU). This would also eplain why his grips never seen as warm as mine. We had to cut off the grip bit by bit to reveal just the heating element. we then wound a metre of the 0.23mm wire around the original element and soldered the ends on to the original connections. Finally, bound the wire with masking tape and stuck the new grip on with hairspray. Works a treat but no warmer than original. We will probably redo next winter using 1.5m of wire rather than 1m to increase the resistance and therefore the warmth.

just a note on repairing your heated grips, use the appropriate diameter wire & type, failure to do this may in fact cause your heated grip grip to turn into an electric fire & you don't want to go there.if your not sure get someone who does to do it.:beerjug:
