Short notice but it's the only date I can fit it in easily

Recent history:

We ran this route in July and the weather was crap, so will be hoping for some fine weather to enjoy the fantastic views this time.

Real history bit:

Last year when there were the Battle of Britain 70th anniversary celebrations, on a ride I unexpectedly came across the grave of a young pilot - alongside the road near Newchurch. A young RAF pilot who crashed nearby. His memorial in the middle of nowhere.

So with all of that in mind I've put together a route from Maidstone, down past RAF Hawkinge, to the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne for a coffee break, along the coast to Dymchurch and up to Newchurch for a stop at the grave, then back up through lanes to Maidstone. There will be a stop off for lunch somewhere - last time we ran through to Bearsted to the Old Plantation so will do that again.

For those who are familiar with my rides - they are usually a ride out and then make our own way home. This one is more of a quicker ride to Newington (Folkestone) and then a more interesting ride back. All roads and lanes very ridable on any bike.

As a bit of a charity fund raiser I've decided to ask for a £10 donation "per bum on saddle" (so rider + passenger = £20) to donate to Help for Heroes - to tie the past to the present.

09.30 start from junction 5 M20 coastbound.

The first run of the route thread a link.

Sunday 11 September

I MUST use my glases when checking the calendar on my mobile phone - the type size is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo small.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it:D

Roll up, roll up.....11 days to go

Book early to avoid disappointment.

Nice ride through the Kentish countryside.

I'll be leading and Dave "Revinslevin" will be tail-end Charlie so lets have a few more to ride between us:thumb2:thumb2

Just because "Mike the White Bike" can't be there......

....don't be put off from coming along......

....and joining the throng:rolleyes:

Weather looking not too bad after 10.00 but it will be windy:eek:

See you at junction 5 for a 9.30 start:thumb2:thumb2:thumb2

Kev,

I'll be there now that I've scraped together the requisite tenner. I'll see you at Jct 5 for 9.30.

Andy

Had a good one again......

.....................unfortunately only three riders - Andy (Brenchleyhibs), Dave (Revinslevin) and Kevin (Woodsie). Mike "the white bike" made a guest appearance as Mike "the white car" to send us on our way.

Left late so that the poor weather cleared from in front of us and it worked - we didn't ride through more than a few drops all day (although it did rain when we were off our bikes at the Battle of Britain Memorial). Good brekkie at the Cliff Top Cafe and continued along the coast and up to Romney Marsh.

If you are about - the 71st anniversary of the most important airborne battle fought over England in the last century will be marked by a unique flypast on Battle of Britain Day, Thursday, 15 September at 11.05 hours by a Spitfire and Hurricane.

There is also a Spitfire flypast on Wednesday 14 and Friday 16 September.

On the way through we stopped at the memorial of Arthur William Clarke at Newchurch, who died 71 years ago today. There were a new wreath and floral tribute on the grave which must have been laid earlier in the morning. http://www.doverwarmemorialproject.org.uk/Information/Jottings/People/Arthur Clarke.htm

Completing the ride back to Maidstone we parted ways - until the next time.

Donation made to Help for Heroes and viewable here:http://www.bmycharity.com/h4h
