Riding modes

Hi everyone,

I have a 2014 R1200GS TE and it won’t change riding modes. It used to but suddenly stop one day.

Anyone had it before? Know a solution?

Steve , sorry no but sounds like a dodgy switch gear , do you have another bike you may be able to try the cluster from , ie a fellow gs owner ?

Where is the switch gear? You mean the switch that changes modes? That works fine and it cycles through the different modes but one I get it onto rain for instance it won’t drop into the mode

Yes mate, just doesn’t want to change, done it hundreds of times before but now it just won’t go

If it cycles through but doesn’t change when you operate the clutch, could it be a problem with the clutch switch?

Not sure if it’s the same switch (I’d guess it probably is) but there’s a clutch behaviour that prevents starting the engine when in gear and sidestand up, unless the clutch is in. You could configure with sidestand up and in gear, clutch lever fully back, and see if it will let you start the engine. If it doesn’t, I think that would mean the switch is duff.

I have had a few issues on mode change where you have to really pull the clutch lever back to full travel to get it to change. I suspect it’s not the finest bit of engineering.

Same with stalling engine.

Two finger clutch operation won't let you restart the engine.

The clutch has to be fully pulled back to the handlebar grip before it'll allow a restart.

So, it rang a bell when I read this earlier, I noticed the other day that the bike started without the clutch pulled in at all so I’ll be checking that tonight/tomorrow.

I’ll make my findings known

I am not sure what all this advice about pulling the clutch in and clutch switches is about (maybe relevant on older models). According to my manual (2017) you just need to roll off the throttle to engage the selected mode which is what I do all the time. I never pull the clutch in and mine always changes into the mode as soon as I roll the throttle off to the stop.

Certainly my 2015 GS required the clutch to be pulled.

So, finally got chance to check the clutch switch and it all checked out ok.
So tested changing the riding modes again and it all worked fine. I just need to get out and try it moving now to make sure it’s working then.

Mine started failing intermittently to change modes over about a year, until eventually it would only do it when stopped. Tried unplugging and plugging it in a few times, which seemed to help a bit each time, but eventually it failed completely. Replaced the clutch microswitch and that fixed it, switches quick and easily now when moving, just like when it was new. About a five minute job, but a $75 part.

Yeah, I’m 90% sure it’s the switch that’s faulting, going to test it on the road today
