Ladbrokes: Scotland 1/100 to enter currency union - 50/1 not to

Ladbrokes press release

Scotland certs for currency union

Scotland are a racing certainty to form a currency union should they vote 'yes' to independence, according to Ladbrokes.

The book is now open on the prospects of the formation of the union, should Scotland break away from the rest of the UK and it's a near-certainty at 1/100 that they keep sterling, with 50/1 the price that any other currency, including the Euro, is used.

For context, Scotland are 50/1 to win the upcoming 6 Nations while 1/100 is the price Scotland would be to beat San Marino in an international football match.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: "It's about as uncompetitive as a betting contest can be. Punters would win a penny for ever pound staked on an independent Scotland sticking with sterling."

Ladbrokes latest betting

Scotland to form a currency union with the United Kingdom before the 31st of December 2015

Toddy, just thought I'd ask what date was it that the Chancellor, Shadow Chancellor and Chief Secretary to the Treasury stated that there would be no union. Was it before or after this little "copy and paste" article you found? Perhaps you can answer in your own words.......

Ladbrokes: Scotland 1/100 to enter currency union - 50/1 not to
...

There's no such bet on the Ladbrokes website but I did notice that "No" is now 1/6 rather than 1/5 at the time of this press release.

You're not doing your cause any favours, mate!

Ahhhh!

Good point and can't now find it on Ladbrokes web site.
Guess it was before.
:bow

However, it's been a hard day driving round Harris with temperatures reaching 17C.
Phew!!
Fabulous beaches.

The parties that oppose independence don't have to say what they would do in the event of a Yes because they don't want or expect a Yes vote.
The S.N.P. who have a proposed a currency union don’t have to say what they would do in the event of this being blocked because they don’t expect this to be the case.

Can't we have a say if we want a currency union with Scotland ? Seems only bloody fair doo's to me.

Don't worry, it's most unlikely to happen. The most likely scenario is that Scotland would simply continue to use Sterling without a formal currency union and accept the fact that the strength of the currency is controlled by the rUK. That would last until and if Scotland was invited into the EU at which point it would probably be on the basis that it adopt the Euro. It wouldn't matter by then as Scotland would have sold it's independence to Brussels.

They can propose and expect all they like but they've been told, emphatically, that they're not going to get one, by all the possible governing parties as well as the B of E. They can propose black is white but it won't change reality. So if they are to expect voters to back them, surely they should explain what they do now? They are the ones proposing to split one of the most successful unions ever; if they expect the backing of the voters when they plan to walk away from sterling, it is their duty to explain what they propose, instead of putting their fingers in their ears and shouting loudly.

The reason these parties are threatening to be obstructive is obviously just to frighten people off voting yes. There is no other reason.

I hope this is tongue in cheek.

No, they've said no because it won't work.

Certainly not tongue in cheek, a very successful union that has worked very well for 300 years, for the benefit of all, and I suspect will continue for the next 300.

...

Sincerely, there really is. I would genuinely wish Scotland well if it decided to vote for independence. However, as an Englishman (currently living in England), I would vote against currency union if given the option as I would want to ensure we (rUK) were not called upon to bail out a potentially profligate Scotish Government. I'm not saying a future Scottish Government would overspend but we would have no guarantee it wouldn't. Self interest? Yes. Vindictive, bullying, bluff? Absolutely not.

If the idea of currency unions appealed to the UK, the logical thing to do would be to join the Euro which would facilitate trade with 500million Europeans. However, we would have to fund the spending habits of Greece. Bollocks to that. If Scotland leaves the UK, good luck to it but Scots would have to understand that the ongoing UK would need to do the best thing by its citizens, not its former citizens. Yes, UK business would potentially have increased transaction costs (put at £500m/ annum by Salmond) but that's peanuts compared with a potential bail out. It would just mean UK business would trade with 5million Scots on the same basis as they already trade with 500million Eurpoeans.

Labour in Scotland can barely control their bladders let alone an organisation like the BBC. Things must be getting desperate in the yes camp if they are having to line up excuses for losing this far out from the vote.

It's all complete TOSH, cos it won't happen :D

Margo MacDonald.
Now there was a lady nationalist I did admire. Head and shoulders above eckie and co. RIP Margo.

Worth a thread of her own almost! In some ways though, a good advert for the "new" politics in Scotland since devolution. She took on the SNP machine and gubbed them as an independent! Also a politician who LISTENED to people. A rare trait. I'll be popping down to the Canongate to sign the book of condolence once it's set up. Wouldnae do that for many folk, never mind politicians!
