Hi

I am planning on doing Route Napolean in late December or January and would like some advice on the road conditions in France at this time of year.

I intend taking ferry to Calais

Your user name sums you up to a T

Are you bored or trying to reach a certain number of posts??
I was taught if you've nothing sensible to say keep it shtum

Depends how high you intend to go, I did RN and a few passes over the last couple of years and it went from stifling to 8' snow drifts - and that was in May!!

January I would expect it to be cold, wet and quite honestly a miserable waste of an epic road - but I would be there with you in as flash and ride at sensible speeds (and very slow on the hairpins - who'm I kidding?, I'm dog slow in the sunshine too!)

Enjoy it, just not as much as at the height of summer

Hi Dave

is that opinion based on experience?

bottom line is I am trying to ascertain if the roads are clear of snow and ice at this time of year and safe to ride on.

I appreciate its never going to be as much fun as doing it in the summer but as my goal is to reach a country where the climate is warm I am not to fussed if I have to suffer a little in the process.

Unless that book is an annoying little twat who needs a knuckle sandwich in the chops or a baton across the knuckles.

as for freezing my arse off i am one of those riders who is conditioned to riding in extreme weather be it heat or cold and takes it all in his stride. If you're well wrapped up in the correct gear the cold shouldn't be an impediment.

If I end up doing the trip I will take pics and video along the way and write up the journey whilst warming my arse during stops.

do you feel lucky?

how can anyone given an honest answer? some years ago I've ridden up to northern Germany in mid December, no problem one year later I got stuck in a snow storm just the other side of Calais.

the safest way as I have your well being as my interest is to use the motor rail and sleep.

unless you have a side interest in self harm, in which case crack on baby.

(I bow to your superior skills, interlect and descriptive skills. You so obviously know more about everything than anybody else, yet you still need to ask a true sign of humility)

Do I feel Lucky ? didn't know her indoors had changed her name!

all joking aside thats precisely why I posed the question as I have never ridden or driven in europe during the winter and wished to draw on the experience of those who have so I can make a decision as to whether the trip is possible at this time of year.

Can bikes be taken on board the motor rail?

Sounds like the weather isn't important. You're main risk will be tripping over your gigantic penis....

Weather isn't too important Road conditions are important

As for tripping over my penis, don't think it will present a problem as I usually fold it in half thereby keeping it to a manageable length of approximately 5 inches.

I Suppose if you had a penis you would know they have a tendency to shrivel up in the cold which reduces the risk of tripping.

cheers for the tip.

Not being one who uses trains I had never heard of Motor Rail or Auto Train before.

looks like it could be the solution to the problem as they appear to travel to the south of france where I think the climate is more suited to motorcycling at this time of the year.

Please sir, my penis is bigger than his AND I can answer his question :bounce1

5 years ago (or was it 6?), January and there was snow from the Midlands all the way to Perpignan and again in the High Atlas (snowed in for two days). It was -15'C during the daytime in the Auvergne.

2 years ago, early Febuary and through France to southern Spain and I was in Summer gear all the way.

There, that answers the question, now stop being such a cock :)

You'll get told off and possibly excommunicated if you make flippant posts in a serious section of UKGser, It happened to me for the most trivial of posts in the 1200GSWC section, some people struggle with even the mildest humour at times :)

My guess is that main roads will be kept clear (salted eeeeeek!) and minor roads are likely to be very dodgy indeed particularly at altitude - I wouldn't attempt it unless I was feeling masochistic even them I'd want to be on a lightweight genuine enduro bike that I was willing to trash.
