Route Napolean in December

the looks ace.....!

I knew there would be someone who'd done it and videoed it..... :thumby:

think you need to read my opening post again.... I was seeking advice on the road conditions in Frogland to assist me with my decision making process as to whether I ride the bike or ship it.

From the various replies it would appear that safe riding conditions can not be guaranteed at this time of the year.

your challenge is tempting but the bottom line is I am new to the BMW adventure scene and currently have zero off roading or riding on ice experience and the last thing I want to do is bin the bike before i have had a chance to enjoy it.

I can cope with the cold and windchill factor but would find it more difficult to cope with the damage to my wallet if it all went tits up on an icy road

I re read the thread and from your posts it does suggest there's a pretty high chance of as suggested by Mike O post 15 "you tripping over your gigantic penis"

my suggestion of "there maybe trouble ahead" post 2 I think has proved pretty accurate, which I further backed up with just a smuttering of science post 33

now your saying cos you don't have offroad expirience, you don't fancy it. I didn't see any offroad riding in the posted video?

I have recently been to spec savers and yes I'm probably an annoying twat, aside from that I am who I am and everyone is entitled to an opinion I've formed one about you.

you appear to be someone who announced his arrival with a threat of violence. your post 11 by the way I'm not looking for an apology I just thought I'd have a quick look over the thread to catch up incase I've missed anything and see if my advise was false in any way from the start.

I even expressed concerns about your safety and well being, which is pretty nice of me.

and now we've reached three pages and all we've gained from it, you don't like riding your, you don't like a challenge and or listening to sound advise from the start.

best of luck with future questions

I have also re read the post from the beginning and whilst you seem to have picked out the replies from the jokers and piss takers on the forum I have taken heed of the advice given by those who have experience of the Route Napoleon at this time of the year and were qualified to comment on the question raised in the thread namely the riding conditions.

as you read further it would have become more apparent that the reason behind the post is that I was seeking advice at whether or not the roads are safe to ride on at this time of the year.

"now your saying cos you don't have offroad expirience, you don't fancy it. I didn't see any offroad riding in the posted video?"
read a little further, i said "currently have zero off roading or riding on ice experience"

I treat people the way they treat me hence my robust replies to your piss taking comments.

you obviously don't know me as I love my riding and don't restrict it to dry sunny days am always up for a challenge and have no issues with asking for advice where i lack the requisite knowledge to reach a decision on my own.

So to summarise from the various responses to my original question it is clear that attempting the journey at this time of the year is likely to result in tears. whilst i know my body can cope with the cold the same doesn't apply to my body bike and wallet in the event of a spill.

how exactly are you able to determine "who is" using your terminology "a joker" and who isn't? with such a limited exposure to the actual forum or the membership?

Actually I'm abit amazed how with all the skills and resources at your disposal you didn't bother with the search feature of the site first.

it's far more illuminating than starting a thread the poor "Mods" need to tidy up cos it's died on it's arse.

easy read posts #5, #18, #23 then compare them with your posts and you wil understand why I categorised you as a joker.

Last time I checked you weren't a moderator so why not leave it to the Mods to moderate.

In the event my post has inconvenienced anyone due to me failing to conduct a search before posting please accept my heartfelt apologies for any inconvenience caused

Road Runner

That vid looks like it would have taken all day to get anywhere:eek

Did you manage to stay upright all day ?

I once got caught out in weather like that , on a GSA I had bought that day!!

I have to say to you ......: bloody well done :thumb

As for the OP .... If you were not convinced ... you must be now

By the way don't let the piss takers bother you. Most of them are quite funny at times

I doubt very much if "the Mods" needed to much else other than have to delete this travel thread when it fails to get going, which it has hasn't it? I doubt very much if there's another 3 pages in this one. Also at the moment they are probably far too busy laughing discreetly in the shadows, which they use to do all the time.....

As for your apology for failing to use the search button, I personally think it's rather short. However as it's Christmas I suspect it can be accepted this time, just don't make a habit of it.

After all this is a serious forum for serious folk who everyday of the week seek to push the boundaries of Adventure and Extreme Travel. I doubt very much that anyone would want to be considered as being in some sort of club, self help group or association. Or have the question raised what sort of oil should you use when it gets cold, or which cold weather tyre's should I get and should they filled with nitrogen or not.

use the search button, it's there for a reason!

Right I'm off to make the world a safer place

Slimpickings I think I'd already reached the conclusion prior to Road Runner' video that a European trip this time of the year is not advisable. But seeing the conditions in glorious technicolor rammed the point home to me.

Having said that if Lo-Iq is willing to offer his services as a support driver, medic, masseur I may reconsider

£750+ VAT a day Plus PD's (50 euro's a day) and I'd do it, I'm a qualified MIRA Medic and have a fully equipped 4x4 which I use for support gig's like this and more complex trips

I can also bring my production equipment to allow you to film it in 4K (super HD)

To whom would you like me to send the proforma?

I don't do sports physio but have someone who can come along he works for the England rugby team. I think he's around £65 per hour but he'll do a block booking I would have thought!

Thanks for the offer but I've done the maths by the time I've shelled out for your services over 10 days plus travelling exes I may as well pocket the money and buy a bike over there and sell it when I'm done with it.
Was worth a try though

As is well documented, even with all their equipment and top meteorologists the Met office admit that it is impossible to give a guaranteed weather forecast much beyond 3 days.

With this in mind your, planned (or not), trip may be possible - depending on the weather ;)
Why not ride motorway to say Valence then check forecast and conditions - if permitting you could then cut the corner off and ride through Crest, Die and down to Sisteron (a very nice route). If the weather closes in you could pick up the motorway from here down to Aix or, weather permitting pick up the route Nap and down into Nice.
From here you're on the Med so just follow it round and down, cut across the ankle of Italy to Brindisi and then take a ferry from there to Patras.

Sounds like a nice trip to me - I assume you've got plenty of time as your OP suggested you were hoping to ride all the way.

BTW we did Brindisi to La Chambre (North of Bardonecchia) in 2 easy motorway days in the summer - to give you a pointer.

Go for it :thumby:

Thanks for the advice, will consult the map and give it some consideration. I did this journey in August and completed the Italy to UK segment in 3-4 days and thoroughly enjoyed it until I got drenched on the M25 less than half an hour from home

Having lived half an hour from the route Napoleon for the last ten years I honestly wouldn't advise riding on it in January. The road is well gritted as it's the primary artery for some of the local ski stations. However it's often OBLIGATORY to put chains on the car due to snow and frequent black ice. If you can get south of Lyon as a recent post suggested then from Valence to Italy should be clear but will still be cold.
I've done the odd ride out on new years day etc but it is risky due to sudden icing of roads as in winter here there are some roads down the bottom of gorges where the sun never hits in winter and they're freezing.
Motorways should be OK as the temperature is due to rise from Thursday. Good luck and book route.

It's cold here today as the Mistral is blowing through. Local expression 'freeze the ears off a donkey' Bar's nice and warm though! Happy New Year!

If you're thinking of doing it this week, think again. Very cold in eastern France. Snow on the ground in many places and more forecast. Maybe warmer after the weekend.

Reading in the paper today about the traffic chaos caused around various points of the french Alps. One particular idiot who was criticising the authorities for stopping and checking that people had either snow tyre or chains, which they do nearly every year. Then said he thought they should have been selling them by the side of the road. Mmm me thinks he may not have had the requisite equipment and not allowed to go where he wanted. yes unfortunately he was English and clearly arrogant. Good luck in your efforts, rather you than me this time of year though.
