I'm possibly going to nip down and ride the Route Napoleon again in mid March,if the weather looks ok at the time.

Can of of you Francophiles tell me if the route is clear at the mo,as I've seen temperatures in Castellane well below freezing at night and wouldn't want to get there and find ice and shite.

If it's below freezing for some time you will find ice and shite, it comes with the territory.

I have been in late March and been unable to get up to Briancon, which is 1,350 m.

You'll be fine.

We're only half way down, in the Charente, and the days are lovely at the moment but still very cold and frosty at night.
Next weeks forecast is colder in the day and loads of rain expected in a couple of days.
But we're a long way from the South of course.

Down here in the warm bit we had 20c yesterday but it is cold again today, 14c right now 12.20 our time. Martin, if I was going to do the Route Nap in March it would be in my car! If you are doing it you MUST eat at that Auberge south of Castellane.

Edit: Just called a friend in Gap, they expect snow next week and still have black ice regularly.

Will do,Christophe !!

I have to go to Antibes for a few days, unfortunately in the car, and usually go the boring way through Italy. I'm thinking about taking the Route Napoleopn instead. I'm in a 4x4 with winter tyres so providing the roads are open I should be fine.

Anyone confirm the whole route is open?

Yup.

Rode the whole thing last week.

Monsieur Arsey, where's a good place to stop for lunch around 1/3 of the way between Grenoble and Cannes?

Nice bike by the way. Image in with 140HP :D

I'd push on a tad further and stop in Sisteron.

Beautiful place.

+1 for a :thumb2 for Sisteron. Plenty to see, especially on a clear day up on the Citadel, quite a few restaurants too.

A few years back, went to the restaurant on the far side of that square where one of our group was "adventerous" with their food. Managed to work out from the menu that one dish involed ox tongue, but not much else. So they ordered it and in this nice earthenware pot was half a dozen ox's tongues, unshaven

His comment at the end of the meal, "the sauce was nice" :D

More Sisteron info here: http://www.france-for-visitors.com/provence/sisteron.html and I'd agree with the Hotel-Restaurant de la Citadelle superb view.

Anyway,Magnum,

sod the car,take the Megamoto.

Would be bloody awesome on those roads.
