RT to GS?

GSA is really the motorbike equivalent of a Land Rover defender or maybe the Mercedes G55. Like a lot of things in life it's mostly for the look.

I guess with the non adventure I felt like I was in an Evoque but on the Adventure I feel like I'm in the real Range Rover. If you're buying something obnoxious and "adventure" like you may as well go all the way in.

Rode the GS today.

Wind blast is a bit more of a thing compared to the RT, but I knew that going in.
Otherwise it was pretty awesome, even in 5 degrees.
Haven't completely decided about the GS or GSA.
Probably the GS though.
 
GSA has a slightly larger screen than GS but they are interchangeable. Also held they are held by just 2 easily removed screws - handy when the weather is hot and you need more fresh air!
 
Just keep road testing them both alternately until you are happy with your choice, both great bikes, but do please keep us in the loop.
 
My 2 cents worth. I am lucky and have a new GSA and and a 2015 RT. I suppose for me the question is what do you want to do or achieve with the bike? I have used the RT for long tours around Eastern Europe and Turkey and it was perfect for this job with a pillion and all the gear.It is designed for this and the wind protection is very good.Comfortable..although we did use Air hawks too. The helmet issue is not BMW related and I assume that aspects of the technology such as bluetooth may be generic and common to both but, in reality I don't know!The GSA feels bigger and bulkier with the 30 liter tank and is a fabulous bike to ride too but it is less of a touring bike but also seems , for me anyway, a bit of a challenge off road?Like some of the other replies I also had a K1600GT and that toured superbly but around small villages the weight (350kgs +) was always at the back of my mind and the Ducati Multistrada was more like the S1000XR which, by the way, is also a great bike to tour on (2 up to Albania this year)...may also be worth considering. I tinker with all my bikes and generally bling them up with higher screens and R&G protection but it works for me...good luck!
 
I thought about the XR but I already have an S1000R that is going nowhere so my hooligan needs are met.

Off to ride the GSA today and have another go on the GS.

Best of luck with your decision , I only rode an RT once and was impressed with the bike but the whole ride felt like I was in a bubble , my wife said it was like being in a car , no wind and no view.
Once back on the GS it made me realise how engaging the GS is , wind , noise , everything that bikes are about. Only my opinion tho as the RT is a great bike.
 
Update: They didn't have a GSA I could test ride so I took out an XR.
As before, great bike but too close to my S1000R.

Took out the GS again, the stock screen isn't great for me- I'm over 6ft and quite broad, ends up with a load of buffeting around the helmet.
I know this can probably be fixed with a taller screen but it isn't certain and it is a big chunk of change to shell out before knowing this for sure.
I'm going to a different dealer tomorrow to get on a GSA.
 
I hopped off my 2005 RT onto a GSA and have never looked back, 3 generations later I take delivery of a new one this Friday and frankly cannot wait.

I tested a RT LC but found the riding position uncomfortable and as a daily commuter unwieldy in the smoke, however the GSA is superb in all situations.

As a tourer it carries everything I need, hail the GSA!
 
I had a 14 plate GS, went off and test rode a K1600 and the RT. I didn't like the K1600 as I thought it was just too heavy but thought the RT was great. That resulted in looking for and getting a 15 plate RT. Initially I loved it but then the extra weight over the GS became more apparent as I used it more. The nav V lack of control with the wheel was annoying as was the lack of locking facility. The screen when at full height seemed to go over my head but then push forward on my back. We didn't try the bike with my wife on the back but I would imagine that could have been quite turbulent for her? I also didn't like that the front was heavy so seemed to 'tip' into a corner. Anyway it was a few too many dislikes for me so I traded it in for a new TB GS. Now all of the above points have disappeared and I'm back with a more enjoyable bike over a wide range of riding, weekend blast, town riding, touring etc.
For me the RT is a one trick pony but the GS manages many tricks very well. :D

Long and short of it- I rode the GSA today for 2 hours and went and sorted out a deal on one.
Wind & weather protection for me was great- it was chucking it down and other than my boots getting wet and a bit of air on my shoulders it was just as good as my RT.

The ergonomics are perfect- I felt cramped on the GS but the GSA with the seat in the high position was perfect.
It just felt right.

Triple Black GSA-TE with BMW boxes, with keyless, GSPro & an alarm.

All of that bike and the Cotswolds to ride it in ... seems perfect

I have the same bike and spec with the Akra on top, love it!

Better try and get your order for all the inevitable accessories into NN before they close for Christmas!

Enjoy your time off riding it.
 
Well, despite organising the swap on the coldest, most icy day of the year I managed to get it home safe and sound.
Love this bike.
