Right, I'm off to Wales to run it in.

Congrats Octatonic

Shes a real beauty. I ran mine in on those great Welsh roads too. Have fun. :thumb

Wondering if people can give me some advice regarding the Bluetooth in the bike?

I have a Cardo Sho1, which is generally fantastic.
I have paired the Cardo with the bike, then the 2nd bluetooth channel in the Cardo to the Nav.
Then I've paired my phone to the Nav.

It all works but the quality of the audio is very distorted over bluetooth- basically unlistenable.
A brief google search reveals this is a common problem.

Am I better off ignoring the bike's bluetooth and just pairing my phone with the headset, as I was before?
I do not need the Nav to speak instructions to me- I was never going to use that functionality.
I would like to be able to listen to radio and control music from an iPad in the glovebox but not if it sounds as bad as it does.

Thanks folks.

My Cardo Q3 works fine with the first procedure you describe when using the Nav, otherwise I pair the phone straight to the Q3 when not using the Nav, in my case the quality is similar either way, I wonder if there is a specific issue with the Sho1. The advantage of connecting the phone to the Nav is that you can see the contacts for making or receiving calls.

Regarding the iPod connection, mine sounds ok but I am having issues with the cable below connected to an old iPod mini. After a few minutes working ok I get 'No USB' shown and it stops working. There is a genuine BMW cable but apparently it gives the same issue. A cheap USB key connected directly works fine instead, I'll probably follow this route unless the dealer has any further thoughts at my 6k service this weekend.

The same issue is described here:

I think the twincam RT had the same audio system.

Congrats on the new bike!

Hi Nico,

Do you have the onboard audio on your bike?
The issue isn't with the Nav, it is with the bike bluetooth distorting.

This seems to be a common problem.
It is almost certainly not going to be the Sho1 as other people report the same problem with different headsets.

Yes, I do. It's not extremely high quality sound but I can hear eveything fine either the radio or MP3 player.

Ok, I have managed to make some progress with this.

Looking at various forums there seems to be a weird mismatch between people having this problem and some others who don't.
I'm not talking about just low quality BT audio, when I paired my headset with the bike yesterday it was crunchy and distorted- it was unlistenable and I think I now know why.

When you use a non-BMW BT headset you do not have the ability to control the volume from the click wheel, you can only control it from the headset itself.

Today I went to my local dealer and paired a BMW Communicator with the bike and lowered the volume and it was working fine.
Then when I paired my Cardo headset again the crunchiness had disappeared.
This probably means that there is a send volume level in the bike that is persistent and not able to be altered unless you pair a BMW headset.
What I suspect was happening was my headset was amplifying the signal as well as the bike, so it was distorting.
Lowering the bike send level seems to have made it much, much better.

I am still not 100% happy with the quality of the BT and I'm looking at firmware updates from BMW to try to address this- they are doing this next week.
I found setting bass to -4 and treble to +1, SRC off and loudness off gave me the best audio possible.

That is interesting, wouldn't the volume control for the loudspeakers (with BT off) regulate the send volume to the BT as well?

Being forced the use a BMW Communicator doesn't make a lot of sense, however I agree the system is far from perfect and could easily be more modern perhaps with DAB radio incorporated.

Let's see what the dealer says tomorrow.

Had the Iconic for a couple of weeks now.
The BT problem still isn't 100% resolved but a firmware update has helped a bit.

Everything else about the bike is perfect for what I want it for- which is as a daily rider and long distance tourer.
I can filter on it, I can ride it pretty fast in the twisties and it fits 4 bags of shopping in the top box.
Brilliant.

Mrs Octatonic is very happy on the back too, although that doesn't happen often, she much prefers to be on her own bike than riding pillion.

Sweeeet...:aidan

Had mine wrapped in Ventureshield vinyl last week to help keep the stone chips and scratches at bay.
The stuff is almost invisible to the eye, so the paint still looks brilliant.
Also had my H2 done while they were at it.

I took good look at the RT Iconic that has been in the showroom at Bowker Preston for several months.

Undeniably pretty, I'm not convinced that it is worth the uplift over the vanilla RT.

Agree, lovely colour, looks the nuts, but now with the 2017 models and the extra gizmo, like ABS pro, don't think I would pay extra for the Iconic. Would buy one used if one came up though

There's a GSA Iconic for sale at Bahnstormer in Alton. Apparently the owner put 700 miles on it, then sold it back to them. Made me chuckle, that did!:D

There are deals to be had on the Iconic.
I didn't pay close to the ticket price for mine- it was closer to the list price for a std bike with a powered top box, audio system.

A dealer local to me has had an Iconc RT sat in the showroom for a few weeks, and can't sell it at full price. I'm sure they'd do a great deal on it, if the timing is right.

Agree! I was the same, if your interested in one be prepared to hassle them, there are deals to be had.
