RTLC ICONIC

White elephant?

I don't think so, they just seem to appeal to a different type of customer.
There are only 100 of them so they don't need to find that many people- not everyone who bought one was UK based too.
Some of them have been shipped out of the country by their owners.

Many of them have sold- when I was looking for mine I rang most of the dealers in the south to see who had one, what number it was and what sort of deal I could get.
The dealer that I bought from was my local dealer who had two and sold both of them, most of the other dealers have sold at least one of the two they were allotted.

The Iconic list price was £20.5k, so you are looking at around £3k for the paint job and seat detail- which is a lot if you pay retail- I don't know anyone here who did though.
Most people had a part ex, or got a good amount of cash off, some of us got both.
They also did lower rate of finance for those who used it.

If I was absolutely focussed on saving money then I'd have bought a 1-2 year old, low miler.
The object wasn't to get the cheapest bike possible- I'm not unconcerned by the extra money and it might be hard to logically justify to anyone, but I think the Iconic owners all seem to have a similar mindset of 'well, it wasn't that much extra and I like the bike'.

For me it was also an issue of availability- there wasn't actually a standard bike available in the spec I wanted until mid September, so I've had an extra couple of month of riding it, otherwise we would have been at the end of the season.
Although I ride all year around I'd much rather run a new bike in during the warmer weather.

If you wanted a similar specced RT but without the special seat & paint, how much less would it be than the Iconic. The dealers I have seen in the South have sold all those they could get their hands on, no idea if they wanted or could sell more.

I love the colour, but I had a 2013 90th edition RT, which I didn't gel with. Rode it for 6000 miles to be sure.

I'm between two stools regarding forking out over £20,000 for a motorcycle.
If the residual value of a limited edition stays strong then it's almost a semi investment.
Now I know that the top case is a bit special but that amount of money for a paint job is asking a bit much.
I've cynically got this vision of a team sitting around a table and debating how much money they can get out of us and one puts his hand up and says, "Change the colour, number them up to 100 and charge them £2500".
I think in years to come they may well be sort after but how will they compare to the future advancements that will be made to the RT that will also make the new bikes sought after.
I really need to see one in the flesh.

As I say above ^^^ at retail, about £3k.
I think only those that bought one as soon as they were release, or were one of those who preordered, who paid that.

I was looking at one at my local dealer yesterday. I asked how much the same specced bike would be in standard colours and told 16.5k. :nenau

Looks like I miscalculated- it is £2k extra, not £3k- at retail.
These are the prices from BMW:

The cost breakdown is as follows:

"£16,032.00 R1200RT LE
£370.00 Dynamic pack
£1075 Audio Pack
£916 Fully Featured Top Box
£150 Top box painted in bike colour.
£500 Navigator 5
£250 Keyless ride
Ebony metallic, non-cost
Sn Marino Blue £170.00

This makes the total cost £19,463 in san Marino blue, or £19,293 in ebony metallic." - This is for all options.

The Iconic is the LE + Dynamic + Audio + Top box + top box paint= £18543 retail.
Iconic lists at £20.5k.

The problem is, it's not a "BMW" special edition, like an HP, it's just a paint job, so will not command that much of a premium, if any, over a regular bike.

Knapdog .....be prepared to part with some money if you do 😊
There was nothing wrong with my TC, and sorry to see it go! But Hey... You only live once, so why not 👍

Funny you should say that, remember the old K1200RS in yellow with the chess board graphics, they charged an extra £500 for the yellow one!

I have zero regrets about getting my Iconic.
Love that bike.

I'm considering letting go of the S1000R as I am never really on it anymore.
I just ride my big red luxo-barge. :)

It might be interesting to ask Tunnruk what an equivalent paint job would cost to do from scratch? Although I understand BMW have patented the Iconic colour scheme.

:nenau

It would probably need to be exactly the same to incur the wrath of the patent. A professional could make it slightly similar but possibly even better.

Found out an interesting fact yesterday, I assumed the Iconics were factory painted, but apparently not, they are painted by a third party shop in the UK. Guess they are painted on demand, so not a 100 of each at the same time. So limited editions are factory painted, but special editions are not.
