Changed the rear rubber brake pipe after it burst whist bleeding the brakes couple of weeks ago, bikes a Dec 1999 R1100RT, replacing front pads this weekend and bleeding fronts (To change fluid) noticed the same ballooning of brake rubber hose, seems the rubber hoses are disintegrating inside as in the post mortem shot, lot of posts on other forums of tales of similer nature so not uncommon it seems after 10 years on bmw rubber hoses, applies to k series as well of same vintage.
Replacing lines to stainless
In the image the upper is clear, lower left partial blockage, right fully blocked, symptoms can be binding brakes and / or black rubber debris in fluid, spongy lever, obvious ballooning, plenty of examples of pipes bursting with no warning
