Running/ breaking in a new one

Ok ... I’m going to try a different approach to my new bike... no exhaust change .. no hilltop :eek:.... and run it in by the book, which ever book that is... I’m picking it up on Saturday and have 3 days to do the required miles before I return it on Tuesday for the first service.

So let’s have it .... how do we run these things in ?
 
Fill it with petrol, go and have a ride up and down some mountain roads, or some winding roads where you are always using the gearbox, and as op above says no revs over 5k, I personally did not start using the quickshift until it was fully run in, and then only on occasions, but that is just me I like the old way.

Work the engine in hilly (can't remember how it's worded) roads
I think it's something like 'use the full rev range', ie don't sit at a constant speed
And don't labour the engine :rob
 
Just spank it. Don’t redline it too much, and all will be good. Run it in the way you normally do, but without the full system or Hilltop, and it’ll be interesting to see if there’s any difference.
 
Pretty much all big bikes are run on a dyno to full revs before leaving the factory so using only 5k is a bit pointless. It's more aimed at safety for bikers new to big bikes etc.

Most engine builders etc will say using most of the revs but in short durations without loading up the motor. ie, motorway roll ons etc.

Mmmm don’t think that will wash with BMW customer services.... basically I’ve said I’m happy to try another bike and do it there way.... but if I have any more issues I’m rejecting it.
 
Thrash it, revving it hard and making it work
Touch the redline briefly
Do not lug the engine in a high gear/low revs
Avoid long stretches of constant revs/speed on A roads and motorways
 
Just ride it as if the roads are wet and you have no electronics to save you, smooth careful use of the throttle and use the gearbox to ensure the correct gear all the time don't let it over rev or labour.
 
Ride it like you stole it (well, within the speed limits obviously). It will thank you for it and, i'm not kidding either :thumb2
 
You live near Wales...get into them there mountains and run it up to 5k revs. Plenty of ups and downs for the bike to get used to you...:D

Funny you should say that ... I’ve just been plotting a route for Saturdays 300 miles ;)

In my opinion....

Running a bike in from new requires you to remember several things.

1) Tyres - your tyres are new and they need to be scrubbed in and heat cycled. The scrubbing in needs care and attention depending on weather. The heat cycle helps the tyre rubber bond properly, so get it up to motorway speeds and some heat in the tyres.

2) Brakes - your brand new discs could warp if you don't heat cycle them properly. So to start with find an empty stretch of road. Do some 50-30mph front brake applications x 3 sets, 70-50mph x 3 sets, 30-0mph x 3 sets (make sure it's safe to do so and no emergency stops, be gentle but firm and allow the discs to heat up).

3) Engine - for the first 300 miles keep the revs below 5,000 rpm, accelerating and rolling off ideally (never labour the engine in high gears or remain at a static speed for too long). Allow the pistons rings to settle and bed in by rolling on and off the throttle. After 300 miles start going up the rev range to just below the red line on cheeky acceleration sprints, rolling off on the accelerator, until it gets it's first service.

After 1st service, kick the shit out of it everywhere (if you want to). ;)
 
first of all before it moves, drop the shite piss thin oil and replace with Motul 7100 or better 300v..
