Running/ breaking in a new one

You say no hilltop. Can you tell the difference,?

The differences are in the mind, the wallet and on those dubious before and after graphs that get handed out....

Start it up, take it easy until the engine reaches normal operating temp then open her up and enjoy. Use the full range but don't redline it too often. Smooth acceleration through the full range of gears and stay off the motorways....

Enjoy!!

Utter bollox and posted from someone whose either never had their bike "Hilltopped" or doesn't know the difference... The graphs are just bits of paper with coloured lines on them, riding a hill topped bike compared to a standard bike are like chalk and cheese and only those who've done it will know why...

For me the two main differences are:
1) significantly smoother power delivery through the entire range
2) no flat spots whatsoever

Done it

Just under 600 miles ... ready for service tomorrow :thumb2

Only one problem ... either I’ve shrunk or this bike is higher :blast.... yes seat is the low positions.... presume it’s something to do with the new fandangled suspension.

Check the suspension settings, rider only, rider with luggage or rider with pillion, soft, normal or hard. rider only should be the lowest setting with rider and pillion on highest.. If it's set to hard as well it will feel very tall...

These are the settings on my 2015 GSA, may be different on a newer model..

my 2018 is definitely higher, maybe because I am fat it jacks it up.

Yes my 2016 was like that ... but this one, allegedly, sorts it out... just like magic .... but need to sort as my feet are looking for the ground

Have you put the suspension onto the “auto” setting?

How odd. If the suspension is on rider only, and auto, you shouldn’t notice it being any higher. Unless it has the sport Suspension?

New bike Nutty, suspension only has 3 settings, Max , Min , and Auto, when I ride 2 up loaded on Auto bike is fairly low, as soon as wife and all kit come off the bike, bike raises up quite high, on low setting alone, feels like being fully loaded and 2 up, so for me I just leave it on Auto, and then use the Auto Dynamic or Rain modes for riding. :D

Once run in a race car engine on the dyno from fresh build.

By the time the mapping had been done - and I mean mapping not remapping all finished ready to go

So just use lots of varying load - if you could ship the bike to Stelvio and go up there a few times that would be a damn good engine

On my 2012 and 2015 GSA I set the suspension for rider plus luggage as I reckoned the rider setting was for someone more ehhh svelte then I. It was a good setup as I could just flat foot it when stopped. On my 2018GSA Rallye when set to auto it obviously decides it needs to a whole lot more compensation for my weight and I can only do a full flat foot if I set the seat to low.
I think that the presets on the older generation ESA was not calibrated for the “real” average GS riders weight (not that I’m calling us fat or maybe the average German GS rider is not quite as robust). Now that ESA can do the preload based on the actual weight it’s sensing it’s a touch higher then we have becomes used to.

As a side note I’m not a fan of road setting for dampening and find it far too bouncy but only at the rear so it feels weird and unpleasant. The dynamic is fine.

Dynamic damping is great when pressing on a bit, but Road, while a bit bouncy, makes hooning down lanes so much fun.

So dropped the new bike off this morning for it’s first service, and had a chat with technician who is working on my old bike ... heads off and can see oil passing the seals, but more interesting is spark plugs are oiling up, and running very rich ... not a good combination, o well I’m sure they will sort it

So which one are you keeping
