washed the 1200 down to put away for the weekend having had it waxed for the salt in jan.

today (monday) shock horror...... rust had dripped off and dried on the plastic (disc) cover under the handle bar bracket!!!! it wiped off thankfully.

then washed the bike off when i got back and spotted more rust which seemed to come from an impurity from inside the big hole in the centre of the rear.

need a drink and trying to figure when i have to go back to vines for calming down and warranty.

When you have done the above, could you explain where said rusty water is coming from in less technical terms ;)

Seriously, I wouldnt be happy with this, puts one in mind of the drain holes on an old Raleigh bike or wheelbarrow

The paint has just started bubbling off the front of the engine, right at the bottom below the black plastic(alternator belt?) cover.

Not right impressed - but I don't worry too much, bikes and rust seem to go hand-in-hand whatever you pay for the bike.

Not going to do anything until just before the warrenty is up....then get the parts replaced for maxiumum longevity.

No trace of rust on mine and I've ridden it all through the winter, apart from the ast two weeks when it's been at the dealer having some warranty work done. I've washed it three times since Christmas then covered it liberally in ACF50.

Mine's the 1100 as well, where it ain't stainless,BMW made it out of plastic!

Well at least that won't rust either:D

well, took the bike in to check on the rust.

rust to the front disc thing at the top of the forks was due to the drain hole. so there was rust to the inside of the handle bar..... well didn't think of there to wash after the binning on the beach)

but the rust to the 'middle hole of the rear' which the service lift thingy goes into is more serious....... because if it does need to be replaced (no safety issue here) it means the whole rear part of the final drive needs to be replaced. not the whole final drive but the bit after the rubber.

when the wax is taken off after the salt - vines - will take another look..... stainless steel it should be and it rusts!

did see, when i was there, another yellow 1200 back from Oz with 20k miles on it...... rust to the same rear place but the rest of the bike was shine.

be a careful monkey....... warrenty is being judged on how well your bike is maintained..... just noticed the black paint coming off the bmw logo in front of the engine.

i hate getting like this..... its a great bike to ride.... just get on with it me thinks.

...fair point, might point it out to Vines at the next service, but not ask them to do anything yet. The bike is well maintained, washed every week, scottoiled, etc.

The paint came off the engine of my fazer.....bad idea engine paint.

just noticed the paint on the front of the engine coming off

just ride it is all i say..... the tires look they will do 15000mls and the front brake pads i'm promised the same...... unheard of with a ducati.

Where do you put the scottoil ? on the final drive chain ?

I found a bit of rust on the front subframe under the beak, where the 45 degree joint is formed.

Its been back to dealer who sorted it no problem at all. When I went to the NEC bike show last year I looked on the BMW stand and all the accesible GS12s had rust in the same place.

No problems since, the bike is mint
