I think these largish capacity upright touring bikes with great road manners will slowly but surely replace the current trend for Adventure bikes. Sadly it seems that all the manufacturers have adopted a 'bigger is better' attitude towards the design of said 'Adventure bikes' and have seemingly turned them into a caricature of a concept lost long ago.
Not sure I agree with that, people have been taking sports bikes/big sports tourers, and taking off clipons and fitting renthal bars, luggage racks (homemade or otherwise), for year, in large part because nobody made what they wanted.
the Adventure market is nothing more than an extension of that, the new RX is just a development, I personally think its here to stay especially the large CC/BHP versions, there is a very large market for sports bike go and handling with a sit up and carry luggage riding position not because an Adventure bike is wanted but that a sports bike is wanted but the sit up riding position is needed!!! it is in my case and lots of others I know. I have no realistic probability of an overland off road adventure, Elephant Rally, Dragon and long distance road touring is my limit, but I would still choose the style over any other.
on the other points, 50 quid on a rad protector is good value, as a small branch through a rad on a previous bike was a very expensive exercise.
A chain is not a deal breaker, I have chain on a 990 and shaft on an R1100GS, similar but totally different motorcycle riding experiences, I love the chain until I have to adjust it/clean it/replace it at which point I just long for the ease of the shaft, I have had the GS for over ten years, and replaced the oil twice I think. On balance would prefer a shaft, cant quite understand why in 2015 I still have a chain whizzing past my legs at several times road speed, there MUST be a better system.
I completely agree with the comments on the build quality though, but then it applies to most make now though, they are built to a price not built to a standard.
I am off on the XR tomorrow for my test ride and expecting to love it.
