The Problem.

Bike (4months old) in for 6K Service with local dealer. Just got phone call to say they had found Cylinder Head stud stripped in the casing!!!! (Now I wonder how that happend) No admission that they broke it.

I got the service early as I have a trip (Belfast to Turkey) booked starting 25th June. Sadly I did ask them to make sure every thing was tightend down. (But not that bl***dy tight)

Suggested BMW Solution.

A repair to the Casing thread! bike back on road by 22nd June Or wait 2 - 3 weeks for new casing. Trip to Turkey boll**ksed

What do I do? Apart from cry?

What does the warranty give me. Going up to discuss politley with them tomorrow morning

Any Advice on How good are the repairs to Stud Casing Threads?? Or general advice about how to deal with this?

Could this have happened in Manufacture?

I could rant for longer but I have go home on the death trap of courtesy bike the have lent me.

Imaybelost very frustrated.

A helicoil/insert is meant to be stronger than the original as long as there is enough alloy around it and it is are fitted correctly.
It could have happend in manufacture or service as there is a human involved in each case.
Get the insert so that you can do your trip. I'm sure they can do you a few special deals in return.

Thanks Hew for the reassurance. Will see what they suggest tomorrow.

Nurse has given me my medication  so things are looking better already!

Cheers

So what was the matter with the bike Hurst's lent you? I've borrowed many bikes from them over a long number of years but they never ever loaned me a "death trap". Do please tell us.
Did you buy your bike new from Hurst's?

As Hew says the helicoil insert should see you to Turkey and back, go with that and report back on the trip! :D

Yes my 12GS was new in Feb. BMW service bike F650GS handles like a pig. But I have to say I am not really interested in it. My problem is just the fact that a 4 - 5 Mth bike that was running fine is now unservicable after going in for a service?

imaybelost.

A helicoil is OK but it's not so much the alloy around it (there'll be plenty) as the length of the coil. It should be comparable to the length of the threaded part of the bolt that screws into the casing.

Can you get a commitment that they do the helicoil repair and replace the casing when you get back from Turkey?

I think I had that 650GS when I had my 1200 in for it's 600 mile service. I reported that it handled really horribly when I handed it back. Suprised nothings been done about it. :nenau

Pressurized

I Would go for that. Will report back tomorrow.

Thanks

Stripped threads in castings

Now that really takes me back a few years. This was a very common occurence when I started motircycling and I shudder when I remeber some of the tricks we tried to 'cure' the problem. However nowadays a competent mechanic will do a very good temporary repair and as it seems the dealer is responsible he will undoubtedly put it all back like new when you get back. Best of luck.

The diplomatic approach is always the best approach I find :thumb

Or you could always throw a hissy fit, stamp your feet like a spoilt child and make spurious accusations like others I've heard off. ;) (not you, I may add)

Think I have already thrown teddy in the corner and given him a kicking with this thread. Very theraputic!

I will be as diplomatic as I can. i am sure it will all work out.

What could possibly go wrong?

A Happy Ending.

All

After all my angst and worry the Local Dealer has come up with the goods :clap . They were excellent :thumb , and very well prepared for my visit. Bike was on ramp in bits and all was explained.

Repair will be made to get me going by Monday afternoon.

Long term fix (As bike is only 4 -5Mths) will be done on my return from Turkey trip.

All under the warranty.

Sorry for the rant at the start but I have been preparing for this trip for sometime and I was tired and emotional

Will report back on trip

Thanks again for your contributions and reassurance.

Glad to hear all wnet well, with the odd exception you really can't knock BMW after sales service :thumb

Good luck with the trip and I'm sure we'll all look forward to a write up on it
(check out the blog in my sig. for my experiance earlier this year).
