The only way the general public can reset the indicator is with a GS911 ... http://www.hexcode.co.za/

My local independent bike shop has a computer that works for this as well. I am sure your local dealer could probably do it for you for a fee.

The problem with all this is that you cant get any ECU upgrades that BMW might come up with without going to a dealer.

I'm in precisely that boat right now - I've just re-done my cam cover gasket (cos the Loctite flange sealant I used turned out to be a bit shite) and had to remove the battery. I thought I'd managed to connect a link cable well enough to maintain power, but one of my clips slipped and I heard the clocks power up after a split second disconnection ... sure enough when I turned the key to check I had the service indicator flashing ... bollocks!

Find a friend with a GS911 ... "Eddie ... where are yoou....??"

Thanks for the info, looks like I married into bmw when I bought the bike and have to keep supporting them.

Well not exactly...

Unless you are so ultimately anal about the completeness of the service record, then its perfectly feasible to just shag the arse off it then go home ...

I'm very serious about getting my own GS911 and doing all of my own servicing - the only real reason for having BWM do the servicing is so that they can install whatever 'new' software they think you need (but I bet you didn't know that the
bike 'remembers' an awful lot about what you do and how you ride ...) but if the bike's running ok and you keep the oil fresh there's not an awful lot to go wrong.

I'm assuming that you're talking about a bike that's out of warranty too...

It'd be interesting to see just how much difference a full BWM service history would make to the bike's value - is a home maintained but mint example going to be worth more or less that an absolute nail whose service book is fully stamped?

A ringing round of applause!
As long as, if you have a new bike, you keep up on the recalls and "service campaigns" and get those done by the "stealer" for free, you are way ahead in the DIY game.

I bought a GS 911 tool as I was fed up of having to rely on someone else to get the service indicator reset, I have to say its a wonderful bit of kit and never had any issues justifying it as I service other guys bikes and make it pay for itself.

Get one and do it soon so that you dont keep on giving the dealers your money and you can spend it on shiny things instead.

Regards

But I do not get it whats the big deal if you do your own servicing you know when its due and its not even a light the its a word (SERVICE) comes up if you cut the power, its set for a service timed or the service interval is set wrong and it comes up early :blast

For all you guys that carry out your own service would a sticker not be cheaper you could even write on said sticker over word (service) the milage service is Due in permanent sharpie :nenau :D and thoes that go to main dealer have the word removed anyways :nenau :D

:beerjug:

Yaaa - I know, but I'm sure there's some germanic logic working here somwhere...

Servicing - well, I go in 6's , 6 -12 - 18 etc., new oil and filters is really all that's needed unless the brake fluid is completely shagged. Plugs should last til 24k, by then you might need to think about valve clearances but by all accounts they're pretty much static and not many have actually needed adjusting ...
