Hi good people, I bought my 1150 GS in March. It's a 2000 year version. I've put 6k on the clock and asked about a service. Just the basics, oil etc.

Well I've always done my own car sevicing and so I've made up my mind to do me own bike service. :)

My questions to you all is; where's the best place to get all the filters etc? Will I need any special tools? What should I be looking for as indicators of anything else going majorly wrong? (1mm play on rear wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock is that within tolerance?).

I am mechanically minded and have the usual range of tools for car mechanics. I'm hoping I can rely on your expertise for and problems encountered!:clap
 
I agree with you, do it yourself, get a Haynes manual from Halfords, as for filters if you want to do mail order try motorworks see the advertising banner at the top of the page or Sherlocks.

You might want to check out the technical section and look at some of the stickies, If you have play in your rear wheel, your para lever bearings probably need nipping up - do a search under "para lever".

For the service I got a BMW filter removal tool, they ain't much, much better than a strap, Motorworks sell them as well, other than that no special tools required.

I use Motorworks or Moto Bins for service items.


The best deal is to get a 'Service Kit' for your bike which will contain everything needed other than the fluids.

Don`t ask here what oils to use...please....(:augie)... look in the Workshop Manual for recommended specs of engine and transmission oils.

Buy a Haynes or Clymer manual and away you go :thumb2
 
You'll find a second set of feeler gauges a good investment when doing the valves 0.15mm for the inlet and 0.30mm for the exhaust (or is it the other way round I can never remember) but as there are 4 valves you need 2 of each when adjusting them .
There is a special tool for oil filter removal - do a search on the site and you are likely to find some tips of where to buy one cheap. they aren't expensive - it's just a bloody great socket that fits on your ratchet from underneath the oil filter.
Contact Steptoe for consumables , he has good stuff at good prices . You can also try Slimbo at www.bikestopperz.com for brake pads.
The rest of the stuff should be pretty standard for any home mechanic to have anyway.
The free play on the wheel can be various things but can be adjusted out. About 1/2 hour at BMW or you can struggle with it yourself - I think there is a special tool needed (I may be wrong)
I use Hein gericke full synth oil - it's cheap and works just fine. There will be a million opinions on which oil to use but remember the boxer is a dinosaur of an engine so don't waste your money on super hi-tech racing oils - you are running an overgrown lawnmower so use cheap oil and change it regularly for a long and happy life together. :thumb2

I've ordered a service kit from motorworks including the oil filter removal tool. I've got the Haynes manual from Halfords:)
Do I need a vacume gauge thingy to balance the throttles?
 
Yes, I use Davida (cos they are local) but you could use Twin Max or any other balancing kit, I suppose some may be able to balance by ear I can't. However despite having the kit I have rarely bothered so it depends how fussy you are. That said they ain't too expensive and if you use them a couple of times they will have paid for themselves, plus it's always nice to buy shiney tools - so get some.:bounce1

At the end of the day if you don't balance the TB's you might not have the smoothest GS on the block but as long as you do the rest, especially oil/filter changes at least you won't **** your motor.:D

Oil - I use mineral Valvolene 20/50, because its a reasonable price and it's available from a place round the corner, it easily exceeds the minimum API spec (F). As long at it meets or exceeds that standard, see what's available locally, the oil does not have to motorcycle specific so you should find something, I would not bother with semi or synth - others will disagree but there you go.

Yep ! ............ or you could make a manometer yourself out of some tubing..:thumb


Do the end float like Steptoe says in his sticky in the FONT OF ALL KNOWLEDGE THREAD then do the valve adjustment.

Take your time with all fastenings ...... remember its not a car ... !
