Servicing Costs (it really does !)

Hi All

My 10 plate twin cam Adventure (registered on 1st Dec 10) is due for it's first annual service, it's only got 3500 mile on it. Dealer up in the North East (Boldon) quoted me nearly £300, this includes all the fluids PLUS the brake fluid which they say needs doing after the first year. Jeffries at Keighley quoted a more sensible £218 which includes all the fluids (I bought the bike from them). Can anyone explain why BMW would want the brake fluid changed after only 1 year and several thousand miles. I've worked in and along side the motor and motorcycle industry for years and other bike and car manufacturers don't state this. It's a bit more of a treck to get to Jeffries but BMW Boldon seem to be way off the mark.

have you told coopers this,i would ,tell them you dont mind a ride down to yorkshire,but would prefer to stay local,the guy to talk to at coopers is paul sharman,in the past i have always found him very approcable.

wasnt needed on my mates first service but some schedules do show it on a combined annual/6000 -

ask to see the schedule they are using and then make a choice !!

The brake fluid absorbs water (hygroscopic) this is the only reason I can think of. My first combined 1st year and 5000 ish miles was £240

Changing the brake fluid in first year is a con, in my opinion.

Brake fluid replaced on my F650GS at one year old, then goes to every 2 years.

My fluid defo needed changing after first year as it had gone very dark, think it may be to get contaminants out from manufacture that leach into the fluid at first.

Have a chat with sharmo - he's open to discussion and the end price is generally the same as his quote. Which isn't the same experience I've had at other dealers...

yes its replaced after a year along with the gearbox oil. Probably something to do with cleaning the system rather than anything else. Kinda like the first engine oil change is early. Goes onto every 2 years after that if you keep up the dealer servicing. Mine had a recall to replace the front brake pipe at the time so it got done at BMW expense

When I had my brake pipe recall done they told me all it involved was rerouting the pipe and tie wrapping it in properly so wouldn't have needed a fluid change.

My one got a new pipe, something to do with it was slightly too short and could fracture or something like that.

Having looked at the service schedule link, this shows that spark plugs are changed at 24000 miles! my bike has just had its 12000 mile service and plugs were changed, dealer stated that the twin cam engines have slightly different schedule and plugs require changing at 12000, can anyone confirm this?

Go to Jeffries, have a free latte, go to McDonalds for breakfast and then test ride a Multistrada around the Dales, stop for tea and a scone in Kettlewell and then return the Multistrada whilst strongly resisting the urge to buy one, back to Jeffries for another free latte and ride your newly serviced bike home.....simples!

Oh and save a shedload on your service!!

I've seen posts here saying that plugs get changed at 1200.

Cars get a one year fluid change because the absorbed water can knacker an ABS pump, I guess it is similar for bikes too. The service schedule probably does not differentiate between ABS and non ABS models, so all the GS range get a yearly change.

+1 for Paul Sharman at Cooper BMW. Give him a bell and i'm sure he'll sort something out.

Got my 09 GSA serviced there while the winter service discount offer was on and it cost about £200 as I recall. Depends if you want the BMW service history stamps as well I suppose

i am not sure how old the link is, the schedules do change and the plugs I know have got more often on recent models it appears

I flushed front and rear systems on the wife's gs last week, it took me 15 mins for the whole job, Its so simple with vacuum extraction, Every bike shop will have a vacuum extraction unit..I just cant understand why they charge so much for such a simple and very quick job..

Thanks all for the er informative replies. It's booked in at Jeffries, they did me a cracking deal. My last GS was serviced by them twice and they did a good job. Yes it's a bit further to travel but the in laws just live down the road and the Mother in Law makes a cracking bacon and egg sandwich (a little joke in there). I'm also loaning a K 1600 GT to see what they are like. I like to keep the service history up as it's a nearly new bike, anything older or Japanese and I would do it myself. I've heard a lot of bad reports from Coopers at Boldon regarding service, they messed up two parts orders for me and the one of the salesmen was very un helpfull when I was looking for the Adventure last year. But as I always say, you pay your money and you take your chance. IMOA I wouldn't use them again, but everyone is different.
