Mmmm...just been to my local dealer to enquire about my annual service for the 1150GS. Mine is a 52 plate model, 21,000 miles (due for 40,000 K service), with servo ABS and is a standard bike. I was VERY suprised to find that there is no 'fixed price' servicing, and all, the head mechanic would say was that the cost dpended upon the individual model. I eventually pinned him down to an 'about 300 quid figure' but wouldnt commit any further. Is this normal ? Thanks again folks :beerjug:

Haven't has the pleasure of a service as such yet but my experience of their pricing so far has been positive (not the price, the breakdown). Showed me the worst case for my clutch, how much each part would cost, what the labour would be and the VAT. I'm sure a service should be more straight forward than that to price. Perhaps the guy was too busy, but I wouldn't put up with an about figure....I had one of those at a Merc garage once.....!!

Yes it's normal, so go to Steptoe. I did :thumb

South London Motors did my 18k service a couple of years ago for a fixed price. OK they then added rather a lot to 'remove the crash bars'.
I do it myself now.

I assume it depends upon how much they do.If it needs pads, that'll be another £ 80 odd for the parts + fitting. If they change the brake fluids front and rear, thats a load more.If the do the fuel filter, that'd add up as it is a b*gger to do and time consuming. You need to pin them down on what they are ACTUALLY going to change.A 6000 oil change is really easy and should be cheap, but a FULL 24,000 miler with fuel filter, brake fluids and valve adjustment can get over £ 400 if your not careful. I've just started doing my own servicing for this reason, and after my 1st ever valve adjustment session,my 1150 purrs like a purry thing and is far better than it has been over the last 4 years since new. Pin 'em down and find out what price they are quoting for what factors :thumb .

But brake pads aren't a service item.

And brake fluid change is at 12k service, and fuelfilter is at 24k service, so they should know the costs of the necessary service if nothing is seized or you have a shed load of extras fitted that are going to add time to the service. -

So they should be able to give you the cost of a service, then just add the cost any consumables needed as and when during the service, like brake pads etc .

Steptoe is the way to go if you want a proper service and not have to take out a mortgage  with main dealers.

I had the same dilema with my 24k service. I knew it was the big one but really wanted to get my head round the bike.

I decided to do it myself including the fuel filter which is inside the tank :(

Bought all the parts from BMW.... £60 and got the various oils from Halfrauds.

Took about two hours to do all the oils and filters and plugs and 5 hours for the fuel filter :spitfire

Little tip.... change the fuel line conectors to either quick release or buy 4 stainless steel small jubilee clips. I just could not get the original fuel lines back over the metal fuel pipes :spitfire.

Really glad I gave it a go.... the only thing I didn't do was to change the clutch fluid as i was fed up by then .

Not a hard bike to work on at all for general servicing.

Thanks guys - relaiable and honest as ever. I've taken lots of your comments and suggestions on board and am now happier with what I need to do / sort out.......... :thumb

This probably isn't much help to you, GSdude, but I've always had a very good prices and service when having my bike done at Southport Superbikes. Not all BMW dealers rip you off automatically.

And you can always say to them something like "please do a 12k service but if the brake pads need changing just tell me, don't change them". Then change the pads yourself and save about 50 quid.
