I've only had my '03 1150 for 2 months and already i've done 5000 miles on it. This has taken the milage to just over 12k, so it needs a service.

I rang the dealer I got it from and got quoted £450! There's no way I'm paying that for a bloody service, I'm quite handy and have serviced previous bikes myself, but is there anything in particular I need to know about the GS?

I'd planned to do the oil and filter, air filter, brake and clutch fluid change and valve clearances. Please tell me it doesn't need plugging into a BMW computer for anything and the job is going to be fairly straight forward! :comfort

No Computer needed, Just good Olde, Feeler gauges and spanners,
I quite enjoy servicing the oilheads

it will be the easiest bike you've ever serviced:thumb

check out steptoes tech threads and have a good look over on ADV rider too:thumb

Nice one! Thanks for that chaps.

Just one further question (and I'm sure it's been done to death) but with regards to engine oil....is good old fashioned car oil 15W40 OK to use? I know the GS has a dry clutch so I'm figuring that will be ok?

car oil is what you want , stick with a mineral oil while the bikes still running in (yep these oilheads take a long time to run in)

20/50 mineral oil is what ive used down the years:thumb2

The bike will still use oil to 25-30k (they all do).

Any normal car oil will do. 10-40 (or 15-40) will work fine but you'll find in the hot weather it'll sound like its falling apart.

A thicker 10-50 ro 20-50 keeps them sounding a bit more refined. 20-50 is what BMW recommend, you'll probably have to buy it online unless you want to pay dealer prices. The comma classic stuff that's sold in a tin isn't of the right spec.

I paid £230 for that service last week; and that included a new alternator belt and a couple of other checks, from RGM near Preston.

The most noticeable effect from the service was synching the throttle bodies, made a real difference.

Well done,

Yer saved this from being another oil thread. :thumb

Does Roy give a loan bike or is it "while you wait"?

A new belt at 12k? Thought the book has a change due at 36k - though I used to do mine every 24k.

If you're insured to ride any bike he often has a loaner, but I usually hang around and try to pick up some tips :augie

My bike has 65,000 on it. It had been home serviced between 37k and 52k so we just started the service cycle again at 58k. I think the bike had an alternator change at 36k, so it was kinda due.

Thanks for all the advice and comments....I really didn't want it to become an oil thread! :blast I should have done a search, but I'm a lazt twat so thought I'd just ask :augie:toungincheek

It's Halfords for me tomorrow then to buy some car oil! (and a Haynes manual, and a carb balancing thingy, and a brake bleeding pump, and...and...and...:blagblah)

Thanks again tossers!

Bear in mind that the Halfords 20/50 is not the right spec.

Consider making one of these, about the best thing there is for balancing throttle bodies.

You don't need the tower as is stated. Just a bit of tube and a length of wood and far more accurate than other methods.

When I made this I also did a vid of using it on the 1100 so take a look at that too if you like.
