The fuelling hasn’t been right on my 1100 since I got it so thought I’d change the fuel filter and this is what I found inside the tank (yes included the jeys cloth) looks like the tank is in need of a proper wash out and reline before I go anywhere else 😢IMG_2636.jpeg

Blimey! Surprised it ran at all

Possibly it looks like this tank of yours had been recoated internally and all has come off over time
Most fuel tank coating have issues and need to be applied perfectly…
eg dry tank, dust free, even coating with all areas covered ….
otherwise it comes off again after some time and starts blocking the filter and the pump..
I wonder if a petrol resistant anti-rust paint job isn’t the better way forward…

Well I’ve cleaned it all out as best as I can (stick a load of marbles in the tank and gave it a good shakeup to get the loose stuff off then after gathering the majority of it I put a litre of old petrol in and gave it a good swill out then syphoned that out and wiped the rest of the residue out with paper towels so hopefully that will be enough for the moment. Took the bike out for a hundred mile ride and she ran really well. No more screaming fuel pump and only used about a third of a tank according to the fuel gauge. Before I was struggling to get more than 160 to a full tank.

Think yourself lucky. This is getting very common now the bikes are getting older, especially if garaged and not used over winter IMG_0624.jpegIMG_0627.jpegIMG_0626.jpeg

Jesus!!, tank not full and left over winter?

This bloody E10 fuel. Ethanol is hygroscopic so absorbed water, which sits under the petrol rusting any bare metal. Keeping the tank full helps by eliminating the damp air from above the fuel supplying water for the ethanol.
Or you could try filling up with non ethanol fuel if storing for winter ( Esso E5 premium? Allegedly little or no ethanol in it)

Errr, the E5 would indicate 5% Ethanol; admittedly this is less than E10 (10%) but it’s definitely not ‘little or no’.

Up until June(?) 2023 some parts of UK Esso had no ethanol added.
From this date this was abandoned and website states Up to 5%.
