Shock Help Please

Help.

I think my rear shock has given in.
Oily residue leaking out of bottom and bike is like a pogo stick.

When I mentioned the problem at my dealers to get some advice they said that the best option would be to fit a new Wilburs.
Didn't recommend a refurb.

With my cash flow not being great at the minute I wondered if anyone had had a standard rear shock refurbished and if it was ok and how much did it cost.

I don't know how much a new shock would be yet but I'm guessing it won't be cheap enough.

Also though about checking motorworks to see if they had any second hand ones in.

If it is refurbishable can anyone recommend somewhere near Sheffield to get it done.

I`m sure you`ll be able to source a 2nd hand standard shock but it`s a pity when these things happen theres always a lack of blingfund
Is it a WP shock? If so I was told by TripleD http://www.d3-racing.com/about-us who are WP suspension dealers that they could rebuild them. Not sure about cost or time to complete though

Not sure of make. Was on the bike when I bought it and it looks like the stock shock.
Going to take it off tomorrow so it will make me feel better as I am actually doing something about it.

What year is your bike? Mine is a late 2004 and is a WP shock both front and rear. It does actually say on the shock body if you have a look.

Mines an 04 so will probably be the same.
Just seen an ad for Brooks Suspension in Bradford who do rebuilds.
Maybe give them a ring on Monday.

Hi Diversion 74

A friend of mine is about to ask me to post up a 1200GS suspension unit for sale.

To be honest I do not know if it is front or rear, or both. I do know that it is for a vanilla GS I would guess 07 or 08 year.

The unit certainly has not done many miles. He switched to WP and clocked up about 18,000 in the year.

I will chase him up.

Friend put a Hagon without remote adjuster on his GS - rides as well as standard although no remote aduster is a pain. However new it was about half the price of BMW one and of course has new warranty etc....

Hi all.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Still not got round to taking it off as the you know what has hit the fan at work.
Luckily I survived the first round of redundancy so live to fight another day.

Going to take the shock off this weekend when I get back to Sheffield and take it to UK Suspension in Keighley.
I know someone who has used them and said they were very happy with them.
Bonus that they are just up the road as well.

All this will be irrelevant when I win the lottery on Saturday though.

Took rear shock in to Firefox Racing in Keighley this lunch time and a nice set of chaps indeed.
Phone call at 4 pm (4 hours later) and got a phone call to tell me shock was ready to be picked up when ever I want.
Stripped and rebuilt. £85.
Will let you know how it is when I get it back on the bike.
Top blokes and even told me to call in on bike when I had it fitted and they'd set up suspension for me if I wanted.
Will post more once fitted and tested but think they said all work carried a two year warranty.
Looking promising.

Can`t go wrong for £85 if you`re on a budget

Picked up shock today and £85 as quoted.

Top service and would recommend to anyone.
Said that the shock was fine and no need to replace as all it needed was new seals.
Obviously done GS shocks before as they said they fitted a shorter valve for the regassing as a standard one would interfere with the frame when trying to fit it.

Going to refit tomorrow so will let you know how it goes back.

+1 for Hagon. A few years back I bought an K100RT, which had been fitted with a Hagon. It popped when 4 months out of warranty (not because the shock was bad, but because I was a courier and carried far too much for the suspension to deal with) but Hagon simply swapped it over. Great service.

Hmmmm Hagon recommendation now pending... This weekend my mate noticed a knocking noise from the rear end as he pulled away from home, stopped, and found shock has broken in half! He is 13 stone, not a courier (any more) and doesn't off road. Hagon have asked for it back as never had one before, so will see how they handle it. Hopefully as well as they did for Expat.

Update on Hagon service. Mate phoned them and they said they had never had it before. They have sent him out a new shock straight away with a return DHL thing to send the old one back in now problem. Fast friendly and apologetic - All good.

New shock is however significantly different where the old one snapped So thought is either a) they have changed it to cure the problem or b) sent the wrong shock in the first place. Either way Hagon customer service gets top marks even if the first shock doesn't.
