All.

I am considering an 1150 GS ADV, (this is because i can't get a new GS non ADV anywhere in the country).

I have heard that the sixth gear is not an overdrive as it is on the GS, what does this mean in relation to motorway riding. Does it mean if you are in sixth gear doing 65mph the engine is red-lining?

Am i worring to much about the 'sixth gear' issue?

Also does the ADV handle as well as the regular GS on the road. I dont intend to go around the world on it, just around Yorkshire and maybe beyond.....

Cheers GRR

New GS

Welcome to the site, have you tried Allan Jeffries in Shipley? they are normally very helpfull. I am sure if there is a GS out there they would get it for you. Good luck with the hunt,
Cheers, Dave

The lower, standard, 6th gear on the Adv is fine at motorway speeds. In fact, it is far more useable/tractable more of the time than the overdrive. And there's bugger all difference in fuel economy. Hope that helps.

What that man said! I have travelled at 100mph for sustained periods on mine whilst abroad & never noticed the revs, so it must be OK :)

Regards,

Charles

Grr, i have just swapped my standard gs for an adv and find the lower box far better, read somewhere that 30-80 roll ons are 14 seconds GS 10 seconds adv! Big differance.
Much prefer the adv box ratios. Not ridden it enough to see how much better it is on the road, but it feels better ( new bike syndrome and all that)
Try Jefferies for tests on both and ecide. You need to be 6' plus to benefit from the adv, decent inside leg a bonus.

I sat on the M25 and M11 for 100 miles on Saturday and couldnt do too many revs cos she's in break-in (new adv).....but at 4500 revs she was doing a comfy 83-85.......100 didn't take her above 5500 revs but at that stage i wasnt looking too closely cos it was me first quickish trip.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I was in Park Lane earlier today and they have an unregistered Sunny Yellow 1150GS. A few weeks ago Ryedale in Cardiff had a Graphitan and a Blue/White.

I am sure that there are some more out there and probably good deals now that the 1200GS is imminent.

Depends on your riding

I'm not a big 'motorway/massive distance in a day' merchant, so the Adventure box is great for me. The low first gear has proven invaluable when riding two-up (plus luggage) in serious mountains and can be useful around town. Very rarely have to slip the clutch. The lower top is fine on A roads and is a fully usable gear, not an overdrive.

On the other hand, if I was doing a lot of high speed/long distance work, I'd probably go for the regular box. How about a new 1200 instead?

Short 6th gear

Hi GGR,
I have a GS 1150.2002 and love the long 6th gear but that is because I use my bike for long distance touring, mainly in France. At 80mph there is nearly 1000 rpm difference between the GS & Adv. I often travel with a chum riding an ADV , when we fill up after about 170-190 miles he puts an extra 4-5 litres in his, of course he has a 33 litre tank so he does have range and some might say what the hell.
What ever advantage you get with a short to gear, there maybe some, it is at a price.
Barrie.

I often have to to M-Way blasts of up to 150miles, holding 100mph is no problem, my normal cruising speed is around 85-90mph, I reckon I get around 37mpg, which I'm happy with:D
The effortless 6th gear acceleration is worth a couple of pence, IMHO;)
